First Look at Zeus’ Lightning Bolt in Percy Jackson and the Olympians

This December will see Disney+ releasing their reboot of the Percy Jackson franchise, and a lot of fans have been comparing the new things to what has come before.

Just in, Disney has dropped a new motion poster and it gives us a look at what could be Zeus’ Master Bolt. Check this out:

For context, the Lightning Bolt serves as the McGuffin for the first book, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It would become Percy’s job to locate the bolt after it’s stolen, and return it to Zeus (who is played by the late Lance Reddick in the series).

Here’s the scene from the first film which has Zeus and Poseidon fighting over it:

While the prop for the original film looked like a literal lightning bolt, it does seem that the bolt here is given more of a form, with a handle for Percy to hold on to. This is actually more accurate to the book description of the weapon which is said to be a Celestial Bronze cylinder, 2 ft.-long, capped a both ends with electrical explosives.

It’s also described to be so powerful that it would make ‘mortal hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers’ so at least we have that Oppenheimer reference.

If anything, we should expect the bolt to appear in further seasons of the series, but it’s going to be too bad that we won’t have Reddick to wield it. Then again, a second season of the show hasn’t been greenlit yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Watch out for Percy Jackson and the Olympians when it premieres on Dec. 20 on Disney+.
