Robert Zemeckis would Rather Do a Back to the Future Musical than a Sequel

Very few movie trilogies manage to stick the landing, but the Back to the Future movies all manage to be pop-culture classics. A lot of fans are wondering when it would be getting the reboot/sequel treatment, and director Robert Zemeckis says he’s not up for it—at least if he’s directing.

Talking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Variety), Zemeckis revealed that Universal has been badgering him about a fourth Back to the Future movie, to which he says he isn’t interested. “You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a ‘Back to the Future 4,’ it just isn’t in the cards,” said Zemeckis.

What Zemeckis would love to tackle though, is a musical. Last year saw the premiere of Back to the Future: The Musical on Broadway, and has since been considered a great companion piece to the original movie. Zemeckis explained, “I would like to do the ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ [movie]. I would love to do that… I think that would be great. I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, [there’s] nothing I can do.”

With Zemeckis being so protective of Back to the Future, I have a bad feeling that Universal is just waiting for him to die before they can start developing a reboot; but I think the movie has aged pretty well, and the way that franchises like Ghostbusters have kind of leaned on the nostalgia train, I think it’s fine that nobody touch BTTF for now.

In the meantime, watch out for Zemeckis other time travel movie Here now in theaters.
