Rachel Zegler has starred in remakes for West Side Story and Snow White, but word is going around she’s going to be in another remake of a high-profile musical.
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH (via ComicBookMovie), Zegler is being eyed to star in a Phantom of the Opera remake from High School Musical director Kenny Ortega. It’s said that Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the leading lady and the object of the Phantom’s desire. It’s said that this version of the movie is going to be a ‘YA take’, and is going to stream on Disney+. So far, the premise for the movie still feels unchanged from previous versions. The story is said to focus on, “a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.”
Take note, MTTSH has been wrong before, but Phantom of the Opera being primed for a remake for younger audiences, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Disney was going to take a stab at it.
I’ll admit, I am a bit worried for Zegler. She’s no doubt a talented actress and singer, but she’s somehow entered the hot seat that Brie Larson was in a few years ago, and has been the target of several ‘anti-woke’ fandoms online, attacking everything she says and does.
Admittedly, a straight-to-streaming YA Phantom of the Opera movie does seem like it’s beneath Zegler at this point, having led a Hunger Games movie and West Side Story. But if the movie does get her, they would definitely have nabbed a great talent, and I can’t wait to see her rendition of Christine.
No release date has been announced for Phantom.
