Netflix had given us a sneak peek of their upcoming anime Pluto from Naoki Urasawa and Osamu Tezuka, but the release date had been vague until now.
We just got a new trailer for Pluto, and it’s been revealed that the series is expected to premiere on Oct. 26. Watch this:
Here’s the official description for the show:
A murder occurs in an orderly world where robots are unable to kill humans.
The robotic Europol investigator Gesicht takes the case, but the mystery deepens when he finds no trace of a human at the scene of the crime.
As he pursues the truth, Gesicht uncovers the most evil manifestation of hate that history ever seen, one that is bent on bringing destruction to the world …
The original Pluto manga from Urasawa (20th Century Boys, Monster) was actually based on an original Astro Boy story The Greatest Robot on Earth. Though Tezuka himself died before the manga even got published, Pluto still gives him the credit for being the one to create Atom a.k.a. Astro Boy. After all, he is also considered to the be “Godfather of Manga” who was one of the first to hone in on the medium as an art form, and without him, we probably wouldn’t have the anime industry as we have it today.
The Pluto manga had run from 2003 to 2009, and was met with sparkling reviews. For a gritty reboot of a children’s cartoon, it’s pretty crazy how they were able to mine a Ghost in the Shell-type story out of it.
Watch out for Pluto when it premieres on Netflix on Oct. 26.
