Avatar and Titanic are two of the highest-grossing films in James Cameron’s filmography, and it looks like he’s going to be bringing his love for water and Pandora together in Avatar: The Way of Water.
Just in, 20th Century Studios has drooped a new trailer for the film, and we get to see Pandora brought to life with modern visual effects. Watch this:
Cameron has always been kind of known for his obsession with the ocean, and it was said that his hobby eventually led to the making of Titanic. If anything, you get to see more of the beautiful ocean life here in the trailer, and there’s also a sequence where we see some Na’Vi trapped inside a sinking vessel. What did I say? It’s totally Avatar-meets-Titanic the movie.
I also can’t help shake the feeling that Zoe Saldana’s Ney’tiri could die in the film. The way that Jake and his daughter talk is framed to make it seem like she’s talking about Eywa or the spirit of Pandora, but for it to have some real meaning, I think we will have to lose an important character—and that would be Ney’tiri, the reason Jake embraced the Na’Vi culture in the first place.
Then again, I am just guessing. With the first movie having been criticized for having a plain narrative over the years, you would think Cameron would want to tell a story that has a lot more emotional kick to it.
Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.
Avatar: The Way of Water premieres in cinemas on Dec. 16.
