Journey Under the Sea with New Trailer for The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid is the film that’s considered to have kickstarted the ‘Disney Renaissance’ back in the ‘90s, so you can imagine the hype surrounding the incoming live-action movie. To jump in on the Oscar hype, we have a new trailer for the live-action Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey, and it gives us a lot of familiar beloved characters including Melissa McCarthy’s take on Ursula the Sea Witch.

Check this out:

While the Disney movies do try to follow the original source material as much as they can, they do bring in small changes here and there, usually to address criticisms of the original source material, like Belle being given more to like about the Beast in the live-action adaptation.

This is just my guess, but I think in today’s more feminist climate, it’s possible Ariel will not marry Eric by the end but will be free to explore the human world. It has always been critiqued just how young she is in the original film, so maybe Disney would address that here.

Then again, I could be making mountains out of molehills. As long as I get to see a giant Melissa McCarthy attacking a ship, I’ll be pleased.

Here’s the official description:

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The LIttle Mermaid comes to theaters on May 26.
