Director David Cronenberg has a penchant for body horror, and it’s been apparent in his work from The Fly to Eastern Promises. Now he’s once again teaming up with Viggo Mortensen for his next movie, Crimes of the Future, and it has enough teasers for Cronenberg’s particular brand of disturbing.
Watch the trailer for Crimes of the Future here.
Here’s the official description:
As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.
While the future is usually depicted with bright lights and holograms, Cronenberg promises a ‘synthetic environment’ that looks like everything was designed by H.R. Giger. The tech just looks so organic, it’s creepy, and I’m sure it will be right up your alley if you’re a fan of Cronenberg’s work.
With Mortensen and Seydoux infamously having no qualms about showing their body off onscreen, we should also expect some morbid visuals when it comes to this ‘performance art’ of the future.
I’d like to see more, but I think it’s best to walk into this film not knowing what we’re expecting to see. Just know it’s going to be disturbing as hell.
Crimes of the Future is set to come out this June.
