Sofia Vergara may be best known for her role as Gloria Pritchett in Modern Family, and while her character has hinted of a criminal background in the show, Netflix’s Griselda outright turns Vergara into a drug queenpin before Pablo Escobar—Griselda Blanco.
Check out the first trailer:
The official description for the series reads:
Griselda chronicles the real life of savvy and ambitious Colombian business woman, Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. A devoted mother, Blanco’s lethal blend of charm and unsuspecting savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business leading her to become widely known as the “Black Widow”.
This isn’t the first time that Blanco’s story was actually adapted for the small screen. Back in 2017, there was a TV movie called Cocaine Godmother with Catherine Zeta-Jones playing the part of Blanco.
We don’t know exactly how Griselda will tell the story differently, but with the involvement of Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard, and Andres Baiz—who were all part of the creative team that brought Narcos to audiences—we could be looking at a solid dramatization of who is considered to have run one of the most profitable cartels of all time.
If anything, Modern Family fans will get a kick of watching Vergara play a character that feels like Gloria Pritchett before she started living with Jay:
With a release date set for January, it’s possible we could get a new look at the upcoming show sometime later in the month, or the start of January.
Griselda comes to Netflix on Jan. 25, 2024.
