Director Thomas Kail has worked on several acclaimed musicals from Hamilton to Fiddler on the Roof, and now he’s teamed up with Hulu to deliver a new kind of romantic comedy musical.
Check out the trailer for Up Here starring Mae Whitman (Arrested Development) and Carlos Valdes (The Flash):
Here’s the official series description:
A musical romantic comedy set in New York City in the waning days of 1999, following the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, as they fall in love – and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.
Besides Kail, it’s also worth mentioning that tick, tick… BOOM! writer Steve Levenson also provided the script for this movie. Plus, we also have the involvement of the songwriters from The Book of Mormon and WandaVision.
With Whitman and Valdes also being best known for playing supporting characters in popular television series, it’s going to be interesting watching the two finally get the spotlight in their own musical series. The fact that both characters have voices in their head that the audiences can see should also add for an interesting storytelling device for the series.
Up Here looks like a lot of fun, and while a trailer can’t really encapsulate the whole thing, I’m hoping the series will add something new to the musical rom-com genre.
Up Here premieres on Hulu on March 24.
