Latest Trailer for Twisters Promises A New Kind of Disaster Movie

They may not have been able to build an entire franchise around it, but Twister starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was a hit when it came out back in the 90s. The movie followed a gang of ‘storm chasers’ who researched tornadoes in order to develop an advanced weather alert system.

The film was parts disaster movie and science-fiction, and Universal Studios is ready to come back to the franchise with their sequel Twisters. Check this out:

The official description reads:

Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, Javi and their crews find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

It’s worth noting that the film is being directed by Lee Isaac Chung who is best known for his Oscar-nominated movie Minari. We also shouldn’t forget that the movie is also banking on the now-realized star power of Glen Powell, who wowed everyone with Top Gun: Maverick and solidified his leading man status opposite Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You.

We’ve gotten a load of disaster movies before where we get to see entire cities get raised up and torn down, but Twisters looks like it’s going to put a focus on more small-scale disasters. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they’re any less horrific and it looks like the filmmakers are trying their best to amp up just how scary tornadoes can be.

One tornado isn’t good enough? Try two. Still not scary enough for you? What if we set it on fire?

Watch out for Twisters when the movie hits cinemas on July 19.
