Joey King Stars in Trailer for Netflix’s Sci-Fi Dystopia ‘Uglies’

Joey King was the face of the Kissing Booth movies for Netflix, but now she’s moving over to a genre that a lot of people thought definitely died with the Divergent series.

Here’s a look at the sci-fi YA dystopia, Uglies:

The official description reads:

In a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16, Tally is eager for her turn to join the rest of society. But when a friend runs away, Tally embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted.

Besides King, the movie also features Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, and Brianne Tju. Orange is the New Black fans will also recognize the main villain who is being played by Laverne Cox.

The movie is actually based on a series of books of the same name from author Scott Westerfeld. As it turns out, King herself had been excited about playing the role of Tally Youngblood way back since she was 11-years-old.

Talking to Netflix, King shared, “What’s crazy is my excitement for the story has been at the same level since I was 11 years old.” As it turns out, King’s older sister had lent her a copy of the Uglies book. King continued, “She was like, ‘Just read the first chapter and if you don’t wanna continue, then you don’t have to,’ … I was like, ‘I wanna play Tally Youngblood someday.’ ”

King’s investment in the project is also made clear as she’s also attached as an executive producer for the adaptation.

I guess it’s worth noting that the movie is also being directed by McG, who is best known for his work on the Charlie’s Angels movies (no, not the one with Kristen Stewart).

Watch out for Uglies when it comes out on Netflix on Sept. 13.
