When Black Adam revealed that Henry Cavill was coming back as Superman, a lot of fans thought that he was still going to be able to keep his Geralt of Rivia role for Netflix’s The Witcher; but as it turns out, Cavill can’t have his cake and eat it too.
In an announcement on his Instagram, Cavill has confirmed that he is exiting The Witcher Season 4, and he’ll be replaced by Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth. Here’s the post:

Cavill doesn’t really give a reason as to his departure, but some suspect that this could have something to do with the way The Witcher is approaching its original source material. There has been word going around that Cavill wasn’t pleased with the way his character was being written in the show, and this was all kind of confirmed by writer Beau DeMayo who admitted that the writers behind the series had no respect for the source material.
In his IG stories (via The Direct) DeMayo revealed:
“I’ve been on show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.) It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale.”
For now, a lot of fans are disappointed that Cavill is leaving the role, especially since Cavill made it so clear that he was a fan of the source material and fought really hard to land the part of Geralt.
We don’t know how the series plans to move forward without him, but if it were me, I would just do a hard reboot or do some kind of huge time skip to at least set audiences up that Geralt will be someone else now.
No release date has been set for the next season of The Witcher.
