Very few horror movies manage to break the mould, and 2022’s Smile was a good time for any horror fan. Now a sequel is set to come out later this year, and a new trailer has just been dropped.
Check this out:
About to embark on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.
If you’ve watched the first movie, you’ll know that the Smile Demon is essentially a metaphor for trauma. What happens is that the Smile Demon haunts a person, terrorizes them for a while, and makes them kill themselves in front of someone else; the person who witnesses the murder then becomes the next target, and the cycle repeats itself.
With the protagonist of this next movie being a pop-star, the Smile Demon would now have the opportunity to curse a massive audience, which is why it would have to be crucial for Skye Riley to stop it before it makes her murder herself in front of thousands.
Since the first movie ended up in a sour note, it would be great if they found a way to actually beat the demon in the sequel this time. The stakes are certainly higher, and it looks like there’s going to be new ‘experiments’ on how to beat the demon.
But what really beats trauma? You think therapy is going to help?
Watch out for Smile 2 when it comes to cinemas on Oct. 18.
