The Penguin will Bridge Both Matt Reeves’ Batman Movies

It’s going to be a while before we get to see the sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman in theatres, but HBO is releasing a spinoff in the form of The Penguin starring Colin Farrell.

The series is set to premiere this September, but even now a lot of fans are wondering just where this series will be when it comes to the continuity of the original film.

As it turns out, Penguin will be the direct bridge between both Batman films; and it will serve as a build-up to the sequel. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Lauren LeFranc explains, “We are the bridge between the two films… We’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned.”

If you’ve watched the latest teaser for Penguin, it’s been revealed that the events of the series only took place a few weeks after The Batman. We don’t know where things will end, but it’s possible that the time skip will be a lot shorter by the time Battinson will be back on the big screen.

As for the character of Oz Cobblepot, The Batman did introduce him as a kind of henchman for Falcone, but by the end of the film, Falcone is gone, and this series will have Oz navigating the power vacuum that Falcone has left behind.

Interestingly enough, it also looks like Falcone’s daughter Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) is going to be a major player in the series. As it turns out, she’s a former Arkham patient, and it looks like she has her own kind of crazy to bring to the table. Farrell describes Sofia and Oz, “They’re two survivalists who’ve been immersed in worlds of duplicity and defeat and violence… They’re very suspicious. They also have a very personally connected backstory.”

Watch out for The Penguin when it hits HBO this September.
