It has been announced that after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise will take a three-year break to have a new story started in 2022. As it turns out, that new series of films will be coming from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
This was confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger who revealed during an investors call (via Deadline) that it will be Benioff and Weiss’ series to come out in 2022, and not Rian Johnson’s supposed trilogy.
We don’t have any specific details on Benioff and Weiss’ films, but a rumor has been going around that it will focus more on the Old Republic era of Star Wars. Also note that these have been called a ‘series’ of films, so it’s likely we’ll be getting more than just three movies.
While I was very eager to see what Benioff and Weiss would bring to the table, I (like a lot of fans) have been having a change of heart when it comes to the final season of Game of Thrones. While all the earlier seasons have been applauded before, the later seasons have admittedly been falling short, and a lot of it is being blamed on the show having to come up with their own story and not having the crutch that was George R.R. Martin’s source material.
Game of Thrones 8 may be coming out as the biggest letdown of the decade, but I guess there’s still a lot of room for improvement on Benioff and Weiss’ part. Hopefully this will come as a learning experience for them. Then again, Disney has been known to fire a director if they feel they aren’t giving them what they want; just ask Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Colin Trevorrow.
The next Star Wars movie after The Rise of Skywalker comes out in 2022.
