It’s been almost 2 decades since the release of Matrix Revolutions, and the Wachowskis are once again teaming up with Keanu Reevs and Carrie-Anne Moss to deliver a fourth film in the franchise. While we don’t have any official details on the plot yet, Reeves has come out to hype up the script for the movie.
Talking to Empire, Reeves comments, “When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, ‘This is a gift.’ It was just very exciting.” He added, “Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me… That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.”
Though the Matrix franchise had been applauded for its phenomenal action scenes, a big reason for its popularity is also because of the deep philosophical roots that it uses for the story. Though the last two movies weren’t so well-received, you have to admit the Wachowskis were impressive in their attempt to incorporate themes of Existentialism and Control. I have no doubt they’ll try the same thing with this sequel.
While Reeves and Moss are onboard, I have a feeling they’ll both be taking a backseat to these new characters. Rumor has it that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing a young Morpheus, but until we get some reveals, all we can really do is guess.
The Matrix 4 is set for a release on May 21, 2021.
