Ever since it’s premiere in 2020, Tony McMamara’s The Great has been a fan-favorite, garnering several Emmy nominations including outstanding lead actress and actor, but only winning for outstanding period costumes. While fans were expecting a fourth season, it looks like Hulu is going to be cutting their anticipation short.
As per Deadline, Hulu has decided to pull the plug on The Great after three seasons. We don’t know exactly the reason as to why the show was cancelled, but it’s possible that the network wasn’t too interested in where the series was going; that, or it would have had something to do with the WGA and SAG AFTRA Strike which is still pretty much happening.
It does come as a weird decision from fans that The Great should end since the series did get a lot of positive reviews; not to mention the powerhouse performances we’ve gotten from leads Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult.
If anything, this does feel a lot like the cancellation of GLOW which also received positive reviews, but was abruptly cancelled. Maybe there’s hope for The Great in the future, but for now, it looks like we’ll just have to settle with the three seasons we already have.
Here’s the official description from the series:
EMMY® NOMINATED The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. A fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter. Incorporating historical facts occasionally, the series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
Catch three seasons of The Great now showing on Hulu.
