It’s been a while since we’ve gotten any official updates, but Matt Reeves’ The Batman is set to begin production later this year, and the director himself gives us an update on the movie.
Talking to THR, Reeves talks about how his film will delve more into the ‘detective’ side of Batman. He explains:
It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.
Reeves also confirms that his movie will feature Batman’s Rogues Gallery. It’s been rumored that the likes of Penguin and an unnamed villain will be appearing, but based on Reeves’ comment, we could be expecting a lot more. I don’t even need the villains to all have significant screentime, but even just glimpses of them in their cells would be a real treat. Is it too much to have returning villains like Killer Croc and Joker as well?
As it stands, The Batman still has no release date, but Reeves does expect the movie to come out sometime in 2021 (just like the rumors suggested). Though I’m bummed out that we won’t get anything next year, I guess it’s better to wait for a great Batman movie than to have a mediocre one rushed out.
Hopefully WB actually lets directors be free this time instead of stomping all over their original visions.
No official release date has been set for The Batman.
