Star Wars’ The Acolyte had ended with a huge cliffhanger and tease for Sith legend Darth Plageuis, but the series was cancelled before we could figure out any more about the story.
Durung a recent appearance at FanExpo San Franciso (via Collider), star Manny Jacinto was asked about the original plans for the show before cancellation, and he explains:
“Oh man, that’s a tough question. They’re not [connected], they’re definitely not. Oh man, how do I answer that? What time is it? [laughs] There are definitely a lot of different theories, like who he is, because we never actually know his true identity… Is Qimir’s name actually Qimir? We definitely wanted to explore it.”
Despite the hype around Plageuis, he was mostly absent for the first season, and he only appeared in a small cameo as a mysterious figure in Qimir’s cave. Jacinto continues:
“There was definitely going to be more of Plagueis in the second, or if not, the third seasons of the show, but I just can’t say, because, you know, we could come back… I don’t want to spoil anything, or give anybody any false hope, but I would just say there was a lot more to explore, for sure.”
A lot of fans were definitely devastated when news came out that The Acolyte was cancelled. After a rigorous hate campaign by the toxic side of the fandom, it really felt like Disney and Lucasfilm were picking a side when the second season didn’t get picked up.
If anything, it was said that the cost of doing the first season was considered to be too much when looking at the viewer numbers that The Acolyte brought in. Too bad the critical praise doesn’t really make a dent when it comes to a series’ survival anymore.
Nevertheless, there is a #RenewTheAcolyte campaign online, and fans are still hopeful that someone will pick it up in the future.
The first season of The Acolyte is now streaming on Disney+.
