The last Planet of the Apes film came out in 2017 and pretty much closed the arc on Andy Serkis’ Caesar, but now 20th Century Studios is ready to come back, and it looks like we’re going to enter a world where traces of human civilization have already disappeared for a while.
Check this out:
Here’s the official description:
Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Instead of Serkis, the film will now have Owen Teague (IT) as the lead ape named Cornelius. Other actors in the cast include Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, William H. Macy, and Peter Macon. The film is also being directed by Wes Ball, who is best known for his work on the Maze Runner movies.
If you’ve seen the original Planet of the Apes, you’ll see that Kingdom is getting a lot closer to that timeline, with the apes slowly building their own civilization. Of course, there are humans still running around, but they have far devolved from the dominant species on Earth.
We don’t know exactly how the new Apes films will plan to change the formula, but it has been interesting to watch this modern Animal Farm-type story unfold through the years. Hopefully we get into it long enough to watch a bunch of humans from the past time-travel their way to the planet, coming full circle.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
