While directors like Christopher Nolan like to take his time and do one project at a time, Taika Waititi seems to be the exact opposite. Besides developing multiple series and working on a Star Wars film, the Kiwi director is said to be writing one more franchise project.
Talking to Collider, producer John Davis has revealed that the animated Flash Gordon project that Waititi was working on is now a live-action film, and Waititi will be the one to provide the script. Davis says:
“Taika is writing it. It was a movie that was a huge influence on him growing up. It is one of his favorite movies. He initially said to me, ‘Let’s do it animated.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, ‘No, let’s do it live-action.’ I said, ‘Even better.'”
Development of this Flash Gordon project has apparently taken years, and Davis was said to have started work on the film after seeing Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. Though some are also expecting Waititi to direct the film, that doesn’t seem to be the case…yet. This is said to be a passion project for Waititi, and though he has a lot of other things expected to release, he’ll probably find some space to put Flash Gordon in there somewhere.
In the meantime, fans wait for the release of Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder which hits theaters on May 6, 2022. No release date has been announced for Flash Gordon.
