Featurette Looks Behind-The-Scenes at the Return of Futurama

It’s been more than a decade since the last season of Futurama, but Fry and the gang at Planet Express are back, and we have Hulu to thank for the reboot. Just in, we have a new featurette with creator Matt Groening and several of the cast members talking about the show coming back, and they promise a lot more antics when it comes to this new season.

Admittedly, of all of the shows Matt Groening has created, Futurama seems to be the one that has received the least criticism. Though The Simpsons is the biggest brand in comedy created by Groening, the latter seasons of the series have not been met with the same enthusiasm by Groening’s fans.

There’s also the case of Disenchantment, which garnered a lot of hype when it first came out on Netflix, but never really got the same level of cult status that Simpsons or Futurama was able to get.

With Futurama being able to create satire about the future and capitalism, this latest season is looking to poke fun at everything that’s changed since 2013, from the rise of virtual assistants like Alexa to a worldwide pandemic. Of course, we should expect the same kind of sci-fi shenanigans that make Futurama what it is, but one of the most enduring elements of the series has always been its heart; and hopefully Groening and his team haven’t lost that.

The Planet Express Crew Returns in Trailer for New Season of Futurama

Matt Groening has a lot of cult shows under his belt, and besides The Simpsons, he also has his sci-fi comedy series Futurama. The last season of the series came out way back in 2013, but thanks to Hulu, we’re now getting an 11th season that will bring back Fry, Leela, Bender, and the rest of the Planet Express crew.

A new trailer just dropped for the upcoming season, and it tackles topics like COVID, Crypto, and Frank Herbert’s Dune. Check this out:

With the original show being conceived back in the 90s, it’s going to be interesting to see just how much the writing has evolved to address things that are currently happening with society like a global pandemic (maybe universal in the show) and crypto currency. There’s even the concept of a virtual assistant which saw its rise after the last season was released.

With Simpsons considered to be a show well past its prime, I’m interested to see how Futurama will be different, especially with the different target audience and setting. Admittedly, the show’s winning factor is the central crew, so no matter what the Planet Express team is tackling, I think everyone will still want to see what happens with Fry, Leela, Bender, Farnsworth, Zoidberg, and the rest.

Futurama Revival a Go at Hulu

Matt Groening’s Futurama had a successful four-year run at Fox before it found a revival back in 2008 with Comedy Central which ended in 2013. The good news is, Fry and the crew at Planet Express are setting a comeback for next year.

According to Variety, Hulu has greenlit a revival of Futurama with original show creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. The new season will run for 20 episodes and will feature the original cast which includes Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman.

One cast member that hasn’t been confirmed for a return is John DiMaggio, who plays the world’s worst robot, but it’s very likely that he’s still undergoing negotiations. He does post this on Twitter after it was pointed out that he wasn’t mentioned in the returning cast:

Philip J. Fry is a twenty-five-year-old pizza delivery boy whose life is going nowhere. When he accidentally freezes himself on December 31, 1999, he wakes up one thousand years in the future, and has a chance to make a fresh start. He goes to work for the Planet Express Corporation, a futuristic delivery service that transports packages to all five quadrants of the universe. His companions include the delivery ship’s Captain, Leela, a beautiful one-eyed female alien who kicks some serious butt, and Bender, a robot with very human flaws.

Just like The Simpsons before it, Futurama is a cult it, and though we should expect some ridiculous future shenanigans, the series does also have some serious heart going for its characters. We don’t know what Fry and the gang have left to say, but it’s going to be great to see some more Futurama for a new generation of audiences.

No release date has been set for the Futurama revival, but the series is expected to release sometime in 2023 on Hulu.
