Famously, the $80 million movie flopped at the box office, and was considered a huge bomb, but Robbie (and several other fans) have expressed that they think the film will eventually get its roses somewhere in the future.
Talking to the Talking Pictures podcast (via Variety) Robbie was asked about people not liking the movie, to which she replies, “I am still saying that… I love it. I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, “Babylon” didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that ‘Shawshank Redemption’ was a failure at the time and you’re like like, ‘How is that possible?’”
With Chazelle being behind beloved films like Whiplash and La La Land, a lot of people thought that Babylon was going to be another slam dunk, but when it came out in theaters, it was mostly buried under all of this negative press.
At this point, Chazelle is considered to be in ‘director jail’ and thinks that the reaction from Babylon could lead to his next movie being delayed. Talking to the same podcast earlier this year, he says:
“Certainly, in financial terms, Babylon didn’t work at all… You try to not have that effect what you’re doing creatively, but, at some level, it can’t help but affect it. But maybe that’s OK? I have a very mixed mind about it. Who knows. Maybe I won’t be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Admittedly, more and more people have been gushing about Babylon ever since it came out. It’s definitely a love letter to that era of filmmaking, and Robbie definitely gave the performance her all. It was certainly more taxing to her than Barbie could ever be.
Who knows, maybe in the next few years Robbie fans could be expecting more Barbylon watch parties.

Variety reports that Netflix was set to acquire a huge project with Wuthering Heights directed by Emerald Fennell (Saltburn) and starring Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Jacob Elordi (Euphoria). Netflix had offered $150 million for the movie, but they lost out to WB Pictures for a smaller deal of $80 million because they promised the filmmakers that the movie would get a theatrical release.
Though WB seems to have won the deal, it’s also said that Amazon is interested in acquiring the movie and they’re promising to give the movie a theatrical push as well.
While releasing on streaming proved lucrative for a while, the recent consensus in the industry seems to be that theatrical movies tend to earn more at the box office, and they also have a lot more staying power culturally. Straight-to-streaming films seem to get lost and swept under the rug upon release.
With the success of Saltburn and the star power of Robbie, a Wuthering Heights movie could be a major box office draw—but it would still be a huge gamble. Until the movie gets released, we’ll just have to wait and see if passing up the Netflix deal was the right thing to do for the filmmakers.
No release date has been announced for Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation.
]]>According to Puck’s Matt Belloni (via WorldofReel) Mattel and Illumination—the studio that brought audiences Minions—is looking to make an animated Barbie movie with the goal to have it attain The Super Mario Bros. Movie-levels of success.
What’s more, the source also says that Gerwig and Robbie are aware that the project is in the works and are not exactly ‘thrilled’ about it pushing forward. But with the success of the first movie, and Gerwig not having a sequel planned, an animated movie may be the next best thing for the Barbie franchise rather than just hiring another director and having someone who isn’t Robbie play the role of Barbie.
Of course, there is the case of Barbie having survived so long with just animated direct-to-video movies. Many a millennial has grown up with Barbie films like The Princess and the Pauper, Rapunzel, and Mariposa.
this is erasure of the barbie animated universe and i will not stand for it. https://t.co/srb3GxaY92 pic.twitter.com/Z7bSeX2JMd

Who knows, maybe an animated film could be a chance for the franchise to get more experimental. Sony did it with Spider-Man, and now we have the MCU Tom Holland films and the Spider-Verse movies. With the right treatment, maybe Illumination can find a way to have another stab at Barbie without it being detrimental to the live-action film.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
An animated Barbie film from Illumination has not been officially announced.
]]>Now Gerwig has been very clear that she has no plans for a Barbie sequel, but that doesn’t mean that WB won’t be doing it. According to insider Daniel RPK (via @Screentime), WB is allegedly going to push forward with a Barbie sequel with or without Gerwig aboard.
Even if that was the case though, there is also the fact that they would need Margot Robbie to come back onboard; and Robbie was pretty much on the same boat as Gerwig when she said that the first Barbie was meant to only be a standalone film.
If anything, Barbie itself isn’t even the perfect film, despite all of its success. Personally, I think they should have done more with the Mattel suits to better integrate them to the story, or tackle the whole Kens versus Barbies with more depth; but the film definitely shines with its feminist message and commentary on what Barbie as an icon means to pop-culture.
If they do push forward, I am hoping that Gerwig would be attached as a producer. I would love for another director to take on the reins with a different approach to the established myth of the first movie.
Let’s just hope they manage to keep to the core principles of the first film. We wouldn’t want it to end up like the corporate cash grab that people were afraid the movie was going to be.
A Barbie sequel hasn’t been officially announced.
]]>As it turns out, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig have not been nominated for Best Actress or Best Director; even with the movie getting a Best Picture nomination. What the movie does have is two nominations for Best Original Song, Best Achievement in Production Design, Best Achievement in Costume Design, and Best Supporting Actress/Actor with America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling; Gerwig did get a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay which she shares with co-writer Noah Baumbach.
The internet is not having the snub, and even Gosling has managed to release a statement talking about the Academy passing on Gerwig and Robbie. Here’s the post:
Ryan Gosling just released a statement that directly calls out this morning’s Gerwig and Robbie snubs in best director and best actress: pic.twitter.com/gf5vQI5Z0c
— Kyle Buchanan (@kylebuchanan) January 23, 2024
“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Geta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film… To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” says Gosling.
Despite expressing his disappointment for the snub, Gosling did go out to congratulate everyone else who got their nominations. He continues, “I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributes their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”
It’s probably too late for the Oscars to do anything about it, but so far, Robbie and Gerwig are backed up by the internet; if anything, it does seem that everyone is starting to get over these awards, and even if the two got snubbed, there’ll always be a chance to collaborate in the future and try again.
The 2024 Academy Awards is set to broadcast on March 11.
]]>According to Variety, Gerwig’s Barbie has been deemed as an ‘adapted screenplay’ by the Writers Branch executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Though the movie did tell its own original story, the fact that it was centred on the existing Barbie IP means that it would have to be treated as adapted material.
The academy also did the same thing with The LEGO Movie back in 2014, as was revealed by director Chris Miller:
FUN FACT: In 2014, the Academy deemed THE LEGO MOVIE an adapted screenplay even though we had already won the National Board of Review Best Original Screenplay award — because it was based on LEGO bricks and had a LEGO version of Batman as a character https://t.co/UzTl9tS4jj
— Christopher Miller (@chrizmillr) January 4, 2024
Though Barbie may not be able to run for Best Original Screenplay, the movie had already nabbed five nominations including Best Sound, Best Original Score, and 3 Best Original Song nominations with What Was I Made For by Billie Eilish, Dance the Night by Dua Lipa, and I’m Just Ken by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
No doubt, fans will want Barbie to be nominated for all the big Oscar numbers like Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actress (for Margot Robbie) and Best Supporting Actor (for Ryan Gosling). Hopefully America Ferrera’s performance a Gloria can also nab a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Voting for Oscar nominations starts on Jan. 11.
]]>#ReleaseTheAyerCut may go trending every once in a while, and Ayer has recently shared another breakdown of everything WB had cut from his darker version of Suicide Squad. Here’s his post:
Asked and answered.
It’s honestly not worth answering again. But here goes – I had a complete Joker arc and character was scary and formidable. Harley had an arc – it was her movie. Diablo lived. Different ending. Enchantress / June had character arcs and made sense. Flag had a… https://t.co/TAg6Knpdzj— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) January 2, 2024
We don’t know exactly what went down at WB when they decided to change the cut of the film, but it was said that after the divisive reaction of BvS, they decided to get Trailer Park, a studio that specialized in trailers, and who also provided the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer of the movie, to cut the film to what is known as the theatrical version.
The closest thing that fans got to what Ayer considers his version of the movie was the first look that was released at SDCC Comic-Con—way before the release of Batman v Superman.
We don’t know if James Gunn and Peter Safran will eventually let Ayer release his version of the movie, but Ayer seems to have been very vocal lately, so maybe he knows something we don’t. Personally, I’m always on the side of the creatives being able to release what they originally wanted, so I say #ReleaseTheAyerCut and give us Jared Leto’s intended take on the Joker.
]]>
Ayer has been very vocal online about wanting to release his cut of the movie (not unlike #ReleaseTheSnyderCut), but he goes into more detail about what went down behind the scenes during an appearance on Jon Bernthal’s Real Ones podcast. Ayer says:
“Hollywood—I tell people—is like watching someone you love get f*cked by someone you hate… The big one is Suicide Squad. That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.”
For context, here was the original tone of Suicide Squad when it was first revealed at Comic-Con 2016:
By the time the movie came out, the film had become more comedic in tone, and it was said that the studio had hired a trailer company to re-edit the movie and make it more “fun”. Ayer continues:
“Come right off Fury, right? I had the town in my hand—could’ve done anything, and I did do anything. And go on this journey with it. And the same thing—authentic, truthful, let’s do all the rehearsal, let’s really get in each other’s souls. Let’s create this amazing, collaborative thing, right? And then Deadpool opened, and they never tested Batman v. Superman, so they were expecting a different result and then they got hammered by all the critics. Then it’s like, ‘Okay, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a f*cking comedy now.’”
Among the plot points that were said to have been dropped from the original plan was the emphasis on the toxic relationship between Harley and Joker; plus an affair between her and Deadshot. With so many people also hating on Jared Leto’s version of Joker, Ayer has gone to say that no one has ever seen his ‘real’ performance since the studio butchered down what Ayer described as a ‘terrifying’ Clown Prince of Crime.
For now, fans—and Ayer himself—have been trying to get an online campaign for #ReleaseTheAyerCut online, but with DC’s new management, it’s starting to look unlikely we’ll get the film released.
Who knows, maybe with enough Multiverse hype and another pandemic, maybe Ayer’s Suicide Squad would eventually see the light of day.
]]>As per Discussing Film, Barbie is set to hit digital this September 5. We don’t have any more details beyond that, but fans will definitely be looking for some more behind-the-scenes goods and everything else you can expect when a movie gets a home release.
With The Super Mario Bros. Movie said to have made a lot of money from the digital release after their theatrical run, some speculate that WB Pictures would want to replicate the same kind of success with Barbie. If anything, we should expect the same kind of Barbenheimer hype to happen this time around; but damn was it a good time at the cinemas.
Hopefully we get more details on the home release soon. Maybe Mattel can even catch up for their severe lack of merchandise when the movie came out. Even Star Wars knew that toys make more than half the sales—just as the Ninja Turtles.
Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.
Barbie is currently showing in theaters, but watch out for it on digital this coming Sept. 5.
]]>One rumor that’s come out is that Barbie star Margot Robbie, who had played the role of Harley Quinn since 2016’s Suicide Squad, is apparently going to keep playing the character moving forward. This comes from @MyTimeToShineH:
I can confirm Margot Robbie will be back as Harley Quinn in the DCU pic.twitter.com/ZYBjR5fOsG
— MyTimeToShineHello (@MyTimeToShineH) August 14, 2023
Granted, there hasn’t been anything official about Robbie keeping the role, but she is one of the most celebrated parts of the old DCEU, and when rumors were going around that Gunn would be rebooting everything, a lot of fans stepped up to have him keep Robbie as Harley.
For now, we don’t really know what Gunn plans to do with Harley. The last we saw of her was when she was in the helicopter having just saved the world from an alien mind-controlling starfish. There were rumors going around that they wanted to have Harley pair up with Poison Ivy down the line, but we haven’t gotten any official updates. There were some that thought that Harley could be in a Gotham City Sirens film, but we haven’t got any updates on that for years.
If anything, it would be great if they could get Robbie back. Personally, I’m still up for director David Ayer releasing his original take on Suicide Squad before the studio meddling, but that could just lead to more muddying of the timeline.
Hopefully Gunn gives us an update soon. For now, catch Robbie in Barbie now screening in theaters.
]]>It looks like Mattel is going to remedy that, and they’ve officially given us a look at their official ‘Weird Barbie’ doll:
https://twitter.com/PopCrave/status/1687557606691454976
In the lore of the film, Kate McKinnon’s ‘Weird Barbie’ is supposed to represent the hand-me-down Barbies that have been roughed by years of play, with little girls cutting her hair and drawing on her face.
What’s great is, it looks like Weird Barbie has a lot of articulation, and of course, she can do the splits just like in the film.
Weird Barbie is just one of several characters that have become standouts from the film. There has been a lot of love for Michael Cera’s Alan who was based on a discontinued doll from the Barbie toyline, and the human characters didn’t get any dolls as well.
With the movie grossing more than a billion at the box office, it would make sense for Mattel to want to capitalize on the hype of the film and release some dolls that are exclusive to the film, besides the main Barbie and Ken.
For now, no sequel is being planned for Barbie, but based on what we got from director Greta Gerwig, the movie already wraps everything up in a neat pink bow. Watch out for Barbie now showing in cinemas.
]]>According to THR, Greta Gerwig’s film about an iconic doll going through an existential crisis has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide ($1.03 billion to exact); the only other film to do so this year was The Super Mario Bros Movie which ended its run with $1.35 billion.
With Barbie being touted by a lot of “alpha male” Youtubers and influencers as more “woke” propaganda online, this has certainly marked a huge win for the fans who came out to watch the film. It should also mark as a win for the anti-superhero movie cinephiles as it proves that films don’t really need to have a superhero in them to be successful in the box office (just ask Shazam! 2 and The Flash).
On the Oppenheimer side of things, the movie has also earned more tha $550 million at the box office, making it one of the biggest WWII pics of all time. There were probably several reasons why the film succeeded, but a lot of fans are convinced that it does have something to do with the film going head-to-head with Barbie.
Though studios are trying to replicate the success of “Barbenheimer” with the upcoming campaign that is “Saw Patrol” (SAW X and the Paw Patrol movie), fans think that a cinematic clash of two auteurs like Nolan and Gerwig can only happen once every few decades.
Barbie is now showing in theaters.
]]>Check this out:
With the last season bringing Harley and Ivy together, it looks Season 4 will once again have them at the opposite ends of the hero/villain spectrum, what with Harley joining the Bat-Family and Ivy getting in on Lex Luthor’s Legion of Doom.
While the clash between the Legion and the Justice League is expected, the inclusion of Harley on the heroes’ side is definitely a good set-up for comic book shenanigans and Harley not quite grasping what it means to be a law-abiding hero.
You have to hand it to a show like Harley Quinn. While the DC side of movies had been flip-flopping on what kind of direction to take with its stories, HQ was able to move forward with its zany take on DC characters, with the heroes even being written to be less than perfect than their live-action counterparts.
Not to mention Harley Quinn also manages to make topical jokes at internet pop-culture managing to poke fun at the dark Joker solo movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as well as Zack Snyder’s Justice League loyalists and their hate for ‘woke’ media.
Harley Quinn Season 4 premieres on Max on July 27.
]]>Talking to The New York Times (via THR), Gerwig was asked if the film was a start of a franchise, to which she replied, “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got.” Gerwig continues, “I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did… I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”
Though Gerwig doesn’t have any current plans for a follow-up, the movie does leave a lot of doors open for Barbie’s story (specifically Margot Robbie’s Barbie) to continue. We also shouldn’t forget that even the Kens also had their own arc, and fans would definitely want to see where that goes.
With the movie being such a huge success, it would be a no-brainer that the film would get a sequel greenlit (or rather, “pinklit”), but it does feel like a lot of the themes and story points could get lost should anyone add any more to its continuity. Though a lot of audiences were in on Barbie being a pop-culture icon that’s also a toy, cinephiles were also excited about Gerwig using such a monolith of a figure to make a commentary on feminism and womanhood in general.
Maybe the movie releasing against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer also had to do with its success, but I like to think both films lifted each other up.
Catch Barbie now showing in cinemas.
]]>Listen to What Was I Made For?:
The video is just one take of Eilish taking out a Barbie bag and trying to assemble the accessories on the table, but she finds herself having trouble, culminating in pouring rain and wind, and ending with Eilish just packing everything up.
Fans will probably notice that a lot of the Barbie outfits that Eilish pulls out are outfits from her own career; too bad we don’t get to see her pull out her own doll.
We don’t really know when this song will come into the film, but I have a feeling that it will come around the end of the second act, with Barbie herself asking what she was made for. We don’t know exactly what the theme of the movie is, but fans guess that the film will be asking the audience if Barbie as a concept would still be relevant today, what with several people decrying her as a problem for the feminist movement.
With the movie releasing the same day as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a lot of fans have been gearing up for the cinematic clash of the decade which has been dubbed as Barbenheimer. Multiple audience members have bought tickets to watch both films on the same day, and fans online have been wondering which film is going to come out on top.
Catch Barbie when it comes to cinemas on July 21. The soundtrack for the film also comes out on the same day.
]]>Watch Ken’s breakdown in the Barbie movie :
So far, trailers for Barbie have shown us Ken trying to impress Barbie and claiming that he’s her boyfriend, but so far, Robbie’s Barbie seems to be more concerned as to why she’s undergoing a kind of existential crisis.
With this musical number though, we get an idea that Ken actually wants to be his own character without being an accessory to Barbie. I’m even getting hints that he might actually end up being the villain of the film, but I guess that role already belongs to Will Ferrell, who is allegedly playing the CEO of Mattel and wants to get Barbie back in Barbie Land.
We know Ryan Gosling is best known for his dramatic roles, but a lot of fans are excited to see him fully embrace comedy with Barbie. At least this will hold until we get that Nice Guys sequel.
Here’s the official description for the film:
Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.
Barbie comes out in theaters on July 21.
]]>Watch this:
The video’s official description reads:
Today on AD, Margot Robbie takes us behind the scenes of ‘Barbie’ for an exclusive tour of the Barbie Dreamhouse. When tasked with bringing these iconic childhood toys to life on the big screen, Greta Gerwig enlisted the skills of production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer. Taking inspiration from Palm Springs midcentury modernism they’ve created a whimsical fuchsia pink fantasy where slides replace stairs and there’s not a wall in sight–when touring this impressive set it’s hard not to feel a rush of playful nostalgia as Greta states “I wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses.
Though we did have hints in previous trailers about how life in Barbie Land functions, we get to see that they kind of literally translated it on the film, with Barbie’s house being filled with flat decals, and Barbie not really interacting with any water or food.
We also see that her house, like the houses of the other Barbies, are also open, and they can all just wave at each other from their bedrooms when their days are started.
The movie is expected to be a kid-friendly adventure, but it does look like the film is also going to delve into the stories history of the toy and how she’s influenced pop-culture for decades. I’m interested to see what the movie has to say about Barbie as an icon, because she’s kind of a divisive hero when it comes to the idea of feminism (more so with modern feminism).
Catch Barbie when it comes to theaters on July 21.
]]>Talking to The Kelly Clarkson Show (via DiscussingFilm), Robbie reveals that she would do anything that Gerwig asked as long as her Barbie got her signature Dream House. She says, “Please can we have a Dreamhouse where she has a slide that goes from her bedroom down to her pool because that is my goal in life.”
Though Barbie’s Dream House has come in all kinds of shapes and sizes over the years, the slide from the bedroom to the pool always seems like an element that keeps coming back. After all, it’s probably one of the more ‘action-oriented’ features of the playset as the rest of the rooms don’t really have Barbie moving on her own.
Based on what we’ve seen in the trailers, it does seem like Barbie Land is going to be some kind of literal interpretation of how Barbie toys are played with, what with the play sets and different outfits. They’ve even gone so far as to make Barbie stand on tiptoe and grab things with an open palm; what are the odds we’re going to see Barbie and Ken nude with no nipples and genitals as well?
Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.
Catch Robbie in Barbie when the movie comes to cinemas on July 20.
]]>We already got a hint of the song in the trailers, but now we also have the full music video with Lipa as the star. Check this out:
Movie soundtracks have definitely been making a comeback recently, what with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Lady Gaga providing an original song for Top Gun: Maverick. We don’t know if the Barbie soundtrack is going to be topping the charts, but based on the numbers that Dance the Night is already doing, I think it’s safe to think that the Barbie album is going to have its own string of hits.
At least we know it’s going to be listened to by more people compared to the Oppenheimer soundtrack.
Nothing but positivity has been showing up for Barbie online, and a lot of fans are hyped for Margot Robbie to be the iconic doll come to life. Besides Robbie though, the internet is also abuzz with Ryan Gosling’s Ken who looks to be a cultural reset for the cinematic ‘himbo’.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see for the movie to come out and see how everyone will take it.
Here’s the movie logline:
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
The Barbie album and movie both come out on July 21.
]]>Check this out:
The official logline reads:
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
As confirmed by rumors, it does look like Will Ferrell is going to be the CEO of Mattel, and they’re going to be out to bring Barbie back to Barbie Land.
While we should expect all kinds of hijinks for Barbie and Ken when they get to the real world, it looks like the movie will also have a meta-commentary on Barbie as a pop-culture icon and how much she’s changed when it comes to public opinion.
Though Barbie did start out as an icon to convince young girls they could be strong independent women, she has also been criticized for promoting unhealthy body standards, leading to anorexia and eating disorders for young girls. We know that Barbie really is just an idea, but it’s interesting to think of her as a character reacting to how the world thinks of Barbie today.
Catch Barbie when it comes to cinemas on July 21.
