Watch Ken’s breakdown in the Barbie movie :

So far, trailers for Barbie have shown us Ken trying to impress Barbie and claiming that he’s her boyfriend, but so far, Robbie’s Barbie seems to be more concerned as to why she’s undergoing a kind of existential crisis.

With this musical number though, we get an idea that Ken actually wants to be his own character without being an accessory to Barbie. I’m even getting hints that he might actually end up being the villain of the film, but I guess that role already belongs to Will Ferrell, who is allegedly playing the CEO of Mattel and wants to get Barbie back in Barbie Land.

We know Ryan Gosling is best known for his dramatic roles, but a lot of fans are excited to see him fully embrace comedy with Barbie. At least this will hold until we get that Nice Guys sequel.

Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.

Barbie comes out in theaters on July 21.

Admittedly, the film is playing coy when it coms to the actual plot of the movie, but the video did come with this logline:

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

The trailer pretty much confirms that the movie will be featuring multiple Kens and Barbies, but Robbie will be playing the blonde, OG Barbie that kicked off the entire toyline. While Barbies specialize in all kinds of skills and talents, it seems that the movie is making fun of the Kens and how gay the character is, despite being Barbie’s boyfriend.

Despite being a kids’ movie, it’s funny how they were actually able to include jokes about the Kens ‘beaching each other off’ in the trailer; there’s also the bit about Ken sleeping over and not knowing what to do about it with Barbie.

The movie looks like absolute fun, but I am hoping that Gerwig and writer Noah Baumbach also have something interesting to say about Barbie as a feminist icon. Though she is a super woman, the toy has been criticized for promoting unhealthy body standards for young girls. I guess Barbie will get that reality check when she gets to the real world.

Barbie comes to theaters on July 21.

Talking to Entertainment Tonight (via Variety) while promoting the release of The Gray Man, Gosling describes Ken, “That Ken life is even harder than the ‘Gray Man’ life, I think… Ken’s got no money, he’s got no job, he’s got no car, he’s got no house. He’s going through some stuff.”

For someone who is widely regarded as Barbie’s ‘prop’ when it comes to the toys, it’s actually pretty funny that Gosling would describe Ken this way. I mean, it would totally change their chemistry if Ken was a successful man in his own right.

Admittedly, Gosling can’t talk to much about Barbie just year. “I can’t wait for people to see the film,” he explains, “That’s all I can say, otherwise Mattel will come in and box me up.”

He does vaguely add:

“It’s not what you think it is, unless it is… And then you know what it is, but I don’t think that’s what you think it is. Wait, what are we talking about?”

With Greta Gerwig at the helm of the Barbie movie, fans are expecting something completely different from the film. I mean, we should still expect the movie to be a kid-friendly romp that’s going to sell toys, but maybe there could be some kind of more adult commentary in there.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see till the movie comes out.

Barbie is set to come out July 21, 2023, but you can catch Gosling in The Gray Man when it premieres on Netflix on July 22.
