Now news has it that a Goonies revival is in the works. According to Deadline, Chris Columbus, who co-wrote The Goonies with Steven Spielberg, is currently working on a treatment for a new Goonies film. Not much details have been revealed about the project, but we do know that he’s working on it alongside a revival of the Gremlins as well.
Just like Skeleton Crew, The Goonies focuses on a group of young misfit kids who stumble ito a pirate map and go on a secret treasure hunt. What they didn’t know was the dangers that they would be facing, and all the young adult angst that was going to bubble up to the surface.
The movie was directed by Richard Donner (Superman: The Movie) and starred Sean Astin (Sam from Lord of the Rings) as the lead kid Mikey. The movie also featured Josh Brolin as Mikey’s older brother who gets wrapped along for the ride.
Other stars of the film include Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan (of Indiana Jones fame).
The movie has definitely earned a cult status and has influenced a lot of things following it. Probably the most famous example is Stranger Things, but there are hints at Goonies in projects like Shazam! Fury of the Gods and of course, Skeleton Crew.
We don’t know what a Goonies revival could be about, but knowing current trends, this could be a reboot/sequel focusing on some new kids; maybe Sean Astin or Ke Huy Quan could make an appearance?
Having it be a reunion of the kids as adults going on another adventure does feel like a big swing, but I think there could be a great emotional journey there.
A Goonies sequel hasn’t been officially announced.
]]>Check him out in this first trailer for Universal’s Love Hurts:
Here’s the description for the movie:
Ke Huy Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where ‘For Sale’ signs bloom. Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose; West Side Story, Argylle), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy.
Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu; Tomb Raider, Warcraft), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried.
With Quan playing a former hitman who is just trying to live his life in peace before his past comes back to haunt him—it really does seem like Love Hurts is just another John Wick-type property, and it probably is. After all, it’s also being produced by David Leitch who produced the John Wick movies. The movie is also being directed by longtime stunt coordinator JoJo Eusebio, who has also worked on movies like Black Panther, The Avengers, Deadpool 2, and—surprise, surprise—John Wick.
Quan himself has also had a history with action filmmaking, so it’s great that he’s able to show off his skills in this film. Though he may be best known for his child acting days in films like Indiana Jones 2 and The Goonies, it’s great to see him actually take on action roles—while at the same time embracing his cutesy wimp onscreen persona.
Catch Love Hurts when it comes to cinemas on Feb. 7.
]]>The movie is set to come out in March, and Netflix has just dropped a first teaser. Check this out:
Here’s the official description:
Set in the aftermath of a robot uprising in an alternate version of the ’90s, The Electric State follows an orphaned teenager who ventures across the American West with a cartoon-inspired robot, a smuggler, and his sidekick in search of her younger brother.
Besides Brown and Pratt, the film has managed to amass a number of stars with the likes of Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Jason Alexander, Jenny Slate, and Giancarlo Esposito.
Though the Russos were at the helm for one of the most successful movies of all time, a lot of people have been saying that they haven’t managed to find a hit after Avengers: Endgame. With their non-MCU projects not really making any waves, some think that Doomsday was kind of a Hail Mary for the directing duo—as well as Robert Downey Jr.
If anything, Electric State does have the premise of what could be a successful action-adventure movie, but time will tell if it’s going to be a hit. Sure, the imagery of robots that look like old-timey cartoons is unique, but the movie still looks as drab and grey as any other MCU flick.
Is it too late to color-correct the film?
Watch out for The Electric State when it comes to Netflix on March 14, 2025.
]]>Loki Season 2 is set to come back to streaming this October, and we have a new behind-the-scenes featurette giving us a look at Tom Hiddleston, Sophia DiMartino, and the rest of the cast as they bring back the TVA and tackle the emerging threat of Kang the Conqueror. Watch this:
We don’t exactly know what to expect this upcoming season, but the end of the first season had revealed that He Who Remains—a Kang variant—has been pruning divergent timelines and placing any outliers into the end of time or the service of the TVA.
With Sylvie killing HWR, the timelines had begun to split, and the threat of Kang had started to emerge with a statue of him presiding over the TVA when Loki returns.
Since it does seem that Kang is now fully present in the TVA by the end of the season, it’s unclear why Mobius would still be unsure of the Kang variant when Loki and Mobius spot him during the Quantumania end-credit scene. It’s still unclear exactly what kind of ramifications Sylvie’s actions had, but it’s going to be great to see the cast come together again.
Let’s hope no further Jonathan Majors allegations come out around this time as well.
Loki 2 premieres on Oct. 5 on Disney+.
]]>The first trailer has just been dropped by Disney+, and it has a lot of surprise stars. Check this out:
Here’s the official series description:
The story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high-school social life with his immigrant home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods. The action-comedy explores issues of identity, culture, and family.
Besides the leads Ben Wang and Kim Liu, the movie has managed to bring together an impressive cast, including Daniel Wu and Ronny Chieng. The series has also brought in not one, but four cast members from the hit Everything Everywhere All at Once, and they include Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and James Hong.
The series even draws from some of the trippy visuals and interesting cutting from EEAAO, but the story looks to be something on the more fantastic side—much like 2008’s Forbidden Kingdom which was based on the Journey to the West legend. We may not be getting a sequel to Everything Everywhere All at Once, but this could be the next best thing.
American Born Chinese premieres on Disney+ on May 24.
