It looks like Mattel is going to remedy that, and they’ve officially given us a look at their official ‘Weird Barbie’ doll:

In the lore of the film, Kate McKinnon’s ‘Weird Barbie’ is supposed to represent the hand-me-down Barbies that have been roughed by years of play, with little girls cutting her hair and drawing on her face.
What’s great is, it looks like Weird Barbie has a lot of articulation, and of course, she can do the splits just like in the film.
Weird Barbie is just one of several characters that have become standouts from the film. There has been a lot of love for Michael Cera’s Alan who was based on a discontinued doll from the Barbie toyline, and the human characters didn’t get any dolls as well.
With the movie grossing more than a billion at the box office, it would make sense for Mattel to want to capitalize on the hype of the film and release some dolls that are exclusive to the film, besides the main Barbie and Ken.
For now, no sequel is being planned for Barbie, but based on what we got from director Greta Gerwig, the movie already wraps everything up in a neat pink bow. Watch out for Barbie now showing in cinemas.
]]>Talking to Rolling Stone, director Greta Gerwig explains the inspiration behind Kate McKinnon’s less-than-stereotypical Barbie, and says she was modelled after her own experience with the doll. She explains:
“We grew up in a neighborhood where there were a lot of girls older than me. So I had a lot of hand-me-down Barbies that had already gotten a haircut by the time I got them. It was like, ‘Well, we have to do that.’ It felt almost like a spiritual conduit to the world of play through that Barbie.”
Besides being some solid comic relief for the film, Gerwig also likens the character to The Giver in Lois Lowery’s novel. Gerwig continues, “Remember that book The Giver, by Lois Lowry, where the giver has all the colors and the feelings and stuff? That’s sort of what I thought about Kate’s character. She would be like the giver in a way like she had the knowledge that everyone else didn’t have.”
Though Barbie was expected to be a commercial product for kids to enjoy, anyone who has been following Gerwig’s career was already expecting something with very strong feminist themes and social commentary—that’s why there was so much hype with the movie releasing alongside Oppenheimer; another movie from a critical darling.
Naturally, the ‘alpha male’ community has started to rally on the film for touting ‘man-hate’, but so far, the box office has been pretty great for Barbie. Hopefully it will cross a billion in a few weeks.
Catch Barbie now showing in theaters.
]]>Watch the trailer for DC League of Super-Pets down here:
In “DC League of Super-Pets,” Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack—Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel—to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes.
While we thought that the film just mostly featured the Super-Pets, it looks like members of the Justice League will be present as well with John Krasinski providing the voice for Superman. We don’t have the full voice cast yet, but the trailer does give us looks at Wonder Woman, Batman, Cyborg, and a female Green Lantern.
Other stars in the cast include Diego Luna (Chip), Natasha Lyonne (Merton), and Vanessa Bayer (PB). Jameela Jamil, Kate McKinnon, and Keanu Reeves are also listed in the cast. Probably the oddest cast member is GLOW’s Marc Maron, who is playing the part of Lex Luthor. If you follow Maron, you’ll know that he has a lot to say about the comic book genre; after an appearance in Joker and now Super-Pets, I think he just has an issue with Marvel.
Catch DC League of Super-Pets when it hits theaters on May 20, 2022.
]]>Here’s the first official teaser shared by Dwayne Johnson himself:

What’s great is we also have confirmation that Kevin Hart will be providing the voice of Ace the Bat-Hound. We don’t know who else is playing who, but we do know that the cast includes the likes of Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, and Keanu Reeves.
If I were to guess, the Super-Pets movie is likely to have Kate McKinnon be the voice of Streaky the Super-Cat, and it’s possible that Keanu Reeves could either be the main villain or the voice of an animated Superman. With the teaser using the classic John Williams score from the Christopher Reeve Superman, there’s a chance that they could be keeping to that continuity; but it’s likely going to have its own timeline as to not keep the writers in a creative box.
So far, the animation of Super-Pets film looks on par with the animated Scoob! film that recently came out. While that movie may not have gotten the best reviews, it was still wonderfully animated, and I’m actually looking forward to a rebooted Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe.
It’s probably going to be a while before we get another look at DC’s League of Super-Pets as the movie is set to come out on May 20, 2022.
