According to The Hollywood Reporter, a recent Paramount investors event had executive Brian Robbins and producer J.J. Abrams announced that they plan to bring the original cast back together, and that includes Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (McCoy), John Cho (Sulu), and Simon Pegg (Scotty). One crew member that won’t be able to come back is Chekov, played by Anton Yelchin, who died back in 2016.

There were already plans for a follow-up to Beyond when it came out, but after the film underperformed, it was said that Paramount wanted to take the franchise in a different direction. There was buzz of projects from Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, but the projects ultimately led nowhere. Fingers crossed that the Paramount going in a direction that won’t just be commercially viable, but also more creatively enriching to the Trek franchise.

Let’s just hope the marketing team doesn’t fumble the branding like they did with Beyond:

I’m honestly happy they’re planning to bring the 2009 cast back. Pine and everyone else just made the roles their own and they introduced a new generation of fans to the where no one has gone before. Personally, I would love for them to continue the thread that Beyond was pushing, but I am open to seeing the franchise go into a completely different direction—as long as it keeps true to the main themes of Star Trek.

No release date has been set for the next Star Trek movie.

Cowboy Bebop Writer Says Fans are Missing Out on Season 2 https://www.geekfeed.com/cowboy-bebop-writer-says-fans-are-missing-out-on-season-2/ Tue, 28 Dec 2021 06:18:52 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=63083 Netflix was building so much hype around the release of their live-action Cowboy Bebop, but just a couple of weeks after it premiered, it was announced that the show was cancelled after one season. Though we have no idea where the series was going to lead, show writer Naomi Markman says that fans would be “missing out” of what was to come.

Here’s her post:

And since this is Twitter, Markman eventually ended up muting the tweet. While it’s tough enough to get your piece of work cancelled, it must be infuriating to be bombarded by strangers online about how much they didn’t like what you made.

Though Cowboy Bebop ultimately tried its best to match the anime, there are just some elements that didn’t translate properly when it came to live-action. Ed may be cute and quirky when it came to the original animated show, but it was just met with painful cringe as the last scene of the series:

For now, there is actually a petition to keep the show going, and it’s managed to gather more than 50,000 signatures; so while the critics didn’t like the series, there was definitely a chunk of the audience that liked this live-action Bebop. While I personally wasn’t a fan of how the series went, I’m not going to stop people who actually like the show from trying to get another season made. Heck, maybe they can shoot for a spinoff movie instead?

Catch the only season of the live-action Cowboy Bebop on Netflix.

Cowboy Bebop Gets Canceled After One Season https://www.geekfeed.com/cowboy-bebop-gets-canceled-after-one-season/ Sat, 11 Dec 2021 08:03:25 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=62860 Though Netflix was trying its best to build up the hype, the premiere of the live-action Cowboy Bebop was ultimately met with a poor reception. It hasn’t even been three weeks since the series premiered, and it looks like Netflix has pulled the plug.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant has opted to cancel Cowboy Bebop after one season. Premiering on November, the series was met with a mixed-to-negative reception, and though it garnered 74 million viewing hours on its debut, the viewership had a sharp decline of 59 percent the following weeks.

At this point, it isn’t really a mystery that Netflix should pull the plug on the show. Though the live-action Bebop did try its best to replicate the look and music from the anime, some scenes from animation just don’t translate that well to live-action. What was a noir, cyberpunk anime ended up looking too much like a cartoon when it was adapted for Netflix.

With Cowboy Bebop being marketed really hard before release, you would think Netflix would have tried their best to get a second season made. Then again, with the legendary status of the anime, there was almost no way that the show could have lived up to the hype.

Personally, I think the series would have worked better if they didn’t try so hard to copy the aesthetics of the anime. If they kept the jazz, and the action, but tried to up the realism when it came to dialogue and characters, maybe they would have got that Season 2 greenlight.

For now, you can watch the first season of Cowboy Bebop now on Netflix.

Let’s Jam in New Official Trailer for Cowboy Bebop https://www.geekfeed.com/lets-jam-in-new-official-trailer-for-cowboy-bebop/ Wed, 27 Oct 2021 14:22:24 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=62161 After a reveal for the intro at TUDUM 2021 and a teaser, Netflix has finally dropped a proper trailer for their live-action Cowboy Bebop, and it gives a better over-all vibe of the upcoming show starring John Cho, Daniella Pineda, and Mustafa Shakir.

Check out the new Cowboy Bebop trailer down here:

One very prominent element in the original Cowboy Bebop series is the music, and they even managed to land the OG Bebop composer Yoko Kanno to provide the score for the show. Besides some character interactions, we also get a look at a lot of the space setting and even have Spike riding his red Swordfish.

When it comes to comparisons from the anime, the live-action series tries its best to bring the same elements to life, but personally I think it kind of just made the series feel more cartoon-y. While the anime felt a lot more serious and grounded, this adaptation seems to have a lot more color and campiness.

Then again, that’s just my opinion. I’m hoping that the series proves me wrong when it debuts next month.

COWBOY BEBOP is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka “cowboys,” all trying to outrun the past. As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them.

Catch Cowboy Bebop when it debuts on Netflix this Nov. 19.

Cowboy Bebop Gets a “Lost Session” Teaser https://www.geekfeed.com/cowboy-bebop-gets-a-lost-session-teaser/ Thu, 21 Oct 2021 14:03:03 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=62049 After several delays, Cowboy Bebop is finally ready to come to Netflix this November. We got a look at the series intro thanks to TUDUM 2021, and now we have a fun teaser showcasing the three main players of the Bebop, Spike (John Cho), Jet (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye (Daniella Pineda).

Watch new preview dubbed the Lost Session:

While this is described as a Cowboy Bebop teaser, it looks like all the material in the preview was shot for the promo. It does give us a good sense of the kind of action we can expect from the show, as well as the chemistry between the three main characters.

Maybe it’s just the jump to live-action, but the show can come off as a tad campy based on the previews that we’ve seen before. Hopefully we get a full Bebop trailer soon that would give us a good look at the actual series. So far, everything looks great, and it looks like the characters are bouncing off of each other nicely.

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop Recreates the Anime Intro https://www.geekfeed.com/netflixs-cowboy-bebop-recreates-the-anime-intro/ Tue, 28 Sep 2021 12:58:22 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=61675 After multiple delays, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop is ready to come out, and TUDUM 2021 has given us a first look at the opening sequence. What’s cool is, they try to recreate the iconic intro from the original anime.

Watch the Cowboy Bebop opening down here:

I’ll admit, the transition into live-action makes the intro feel kind of corny, but I really appreciate the effort. If you ask me, they could have just kep the whole thing animated and stylized, but it’s great that they managed to keep Yoko Kanno’s TANK! because it is the definitive mood-setter for a show like Cowboy Bebop.

For comparison, here’s the original:

For now, the show looks to be holding on to the inclusion of Ed, seeing that the character is kind of unique when it comes to the case of gender representation. Though the show was fine on dubbing Ed as a girl in the original Bebop, it’s possible that the showrunners will want to embrace the ambiguity of Ed’s gender and cast someone nonbinary to play them. Personally, I just thought a girl with the name “Edward” just added to the uniqueness of the show’s future setting.

For now, Cowboy Bebop is set to release on Netflix on Nov. 19.

Cowboy Bebop Live-Action Gets First Images https://www.geekfeed.com/cowboy-bebop-live-action-gets-first-images/ Tue, 24 Aug 2021 16:45:05 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=61152 After multiple delays, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop is finally set to premiere later this year. Just in, we have our first look at Spike (John Cho), Jet (Mustafa Shakir), Faye (Daniella Pineda).

Check them out:

Netflix has also confirmed that the show will be making its debut on November 19 later this year. With the premiere three months away, we should get a trailer drop very soon.

Entertainment Weekly also dropped a lot of other stills which you can check here.

Going back to the pictures, you can see that the costumes pretty much try to stick to the characters’ look from the anime. Sure animated Faye has an outfit that’s more revealing, but I guess this is a tasteful translation of the character for live-action.

It’s also easy to overlook that Faye is holding the leash of the Bebop’s resident mongrel Ein. Now all they need is to cast someone as Ed, but I have a feeling that they’re holding out  to introduce her character in the second season—that is, if we get a second season of Cowboy Bebop.

So far, all the actors look their part. A lot of pressure is on John Cho for pulling off a live-action Spike Spiegel, but I have confidence that he can pull of the action work and the chill bounty hunter persona. I mean, he’s come a long way from the Harold & Kumar movies.

With a solid cast and original Bebop composer Yoko Kanno returning to score the series, Netflix’s live-action Bebop has a lot of great things going for it. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Catch the live-action Cowboy Bebop when it makes its debut on Netflix on Nov. 19.

Cowboy Bebop Release Window Announced https://www.geekfeed.com/cowboy-bebop-release-window-announced/ Thu, 10 Jun 2021 14:51:48 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=59986 While there are a lot of great things about the original Cowboy Bebop, one element that seems to stand out is the jazz-inspired score by Yoko Kanno. With Netflix set to debut their live-action adaptation soon, we now have a release window, plus confirmation that Kanno will be coming back to provide music for the series.

Check out the announcement:

While sci-fi westerns can be dime-a-dozen nowadays with shows like The Mandalorian, Cowboy Bebop manages to set itself apart thanks to the very specific atmosphere that it has thanks to the music of Yoko Kanno. While we should expect some music from the original show to make a comeback, it would be great if we could get some familiar motifs from the original anime.

Though the return of Kanno is the big focus of the video, we also have a small teaser in the end that confirms that the show is set to come out this fall. After multiple delays—including a global pandemic and John Cho sustaining a major injury—Cowboy Bebop is finally coming out. Let’s just hope that it manages to break the Netflix curse (i.e., Death Note) and actually be a decent adaptation.

Here’s the official description of Cowboy Bebop:

The space Western story follows Spike Spiegel and his rag-tag crew of bounty hunters, or Cowboys, as they try to capture the galaxy’s worst criminals and survive the unexpected dangers they encounter throughout space, sometimes saving the world in the process but always leaving millions in damages.

No release date has been set for Cowboy Bebop, but the series is expected to debut on Netflix sometime this fall.

Aladdin Meets Crazy Rich Asians in First Trailer for Wish Dragon https://www.geekfeed.com/aladdin-meets-crazy-rich-asians-in-first-trailer-for-wish-dragon/ Mon, 17 May 2021 14:01:34 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=59522 Though Disney may be the biggest name in animated films right now, that hasn’t stopped Netflix from trying to pump out its own animated films. After Klaus and Over the Moon, Netflix has dropped the first trailer for their Asian-centric animated film, Wish Dragon.

Watch this:

Here’s the official description:

Determined teen Din (Jimmy Wong) is longing to reconnect with his childhood best friend (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) when he meets a wish-granting dragon (John Cho) that leads him on an adventure a thousand years in the making.

On the surface, you can already see a lot of similarities with Disney’s animated Aladdin. Besides a magical creature from the lamp that grants three wishes, the ‘genie’ seems to have the same limitations like the ability not to make people fall in love.

I guess one difference here is that the protagonist Din has a past with his significant other Li Na, unlike Aladdin who was just smitten by Jasmine–who he had no history with.

And what’s also interesting is that the two friends Din and Li Na aren’t separated by royalty, but rather class—which is a more modern take on the classic romance. We don’t know how else the movie plans to explore the concept, but it already feels a lot like Crazy Rich Asians.

I’ll admit, the movie looks very derivative, but with Aron Warner (Shrek) onboard as producer, we should expect something heartfelt or funny from Wish Dragon. I guess it’s also worth noting that Jackie Chan is a producer for the movie, and he’ll be providing the voice of the Dragon for the Chinese dub.

Catch Wish Dragon when it debuts on Netflix on June 11.
