With Way of the Water revealing there’s a tribe of Na’vi that dwelled in the water, new reveals for Avatar: Fire and Ash have revealed even more tribes of Pandora, and fans are starting to make even more ATLA comparisons.
According to Empire, there will be more than one tribe introduced in the third Avatar movie. Besides the fire people who will be the central villains of the film, the movie will also introduce Wind Traders, a nomadic tribe that ride flying creatures and travel around the planet. Cameron explains, “They’re nomadic traders, equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages… And you know, they’re just fun. Like all Na’vi, they live in a symbiosis with their creatures.”
Evil fire people, world-trotting air people, and ocean-dwelling water people… now where have we seen that before?
Already the announcement is being flooded with Last Airbender comparisons, and it really isn’t surprising because the story of Cameron’s Avatar has always been pretty simple. If anything, it’s kind of a testament to how elegant the world-building is in Last Airbender that the people of each element are given specific traits; fire people are the villains, and the air people are free and roam the skies.
And here I thought Jake’s clan was already representing the air because the first movie referred to the Na’vi as Sky People.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to come to theatres on Dec. 19.
]]>With James Cameron being attached as producer for Dark Fate, he admits that they ‘miscalculated’ and that it was kind of his fault for leaning too heavily on returning actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton.
Talking to Empire Online, Cameron says, “Our problem was not that the film didn’t work… The problem was, people didn’t show up. I’ve owned this to Tim Miller many times. I said, ‘I torpedoed that movie before we ever wrote a word or shot a foot of film.’”
Cameron says that he was ‘getting high on my own supply’ when they wanted to make a direct sequel to Terminator 2, and though they achieved their goal with the film, he says that the original audience for Terminator was already ‘dead, retired, crippled, or have dementia.’ “It was a non-starter. There was nothing in the movie for a new audience,” said Cameron.
Though the movie may have bombed, Cameron still firmly believes that it’s one of the better entries in the franchise. “I still think mine are the best, but I put it in solid third,” said Cameron, “I think the Rev-9 was cool as shit… Personally, I think that’s as good as anything that we did back then.”
It’s not clear when Terminator will come back to the big screen, but the Terminator: Zero anime on Netflix is getting a lot of great buzz.
]]>Talking to Variety, Spaeny revealed that the film will be taking place between the events of Alien and Aliens—the first two films in the franchise. She says, “It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie.”
Granted there is 57 years between the timeline of Alien and Aliens, so there is a lot of room for Romulus to tell its story—it can even tell a whole new trilogy should things go right.
Admittedly, Covenant did end with the tease that David (Michael Fassbender) was planning to cause some chaos with the new Xenomorphs that he’s breeded. With a whole new cast of characters being focused on for Romulus, I’m just hoping they manage to tie up any loose ends, because he’s undoubtedly one of the best characters to come out of the franchise ever since they rebooted the whole thing with Prometheus.
If anything, David has already transcended two different crews with Prometheus and Covenant, so it does kind of track that he would be facing a new cast of characters. But until it’s officially revealed, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Alien: Romulus is aiming for a release date on Aug. 16, 2024.
]]>Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to release this December, and we have a new story trailer highlighting a new protagonist. Check this out:
The story description reads:
Become Na’vi and explore the Western Frontier in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. You’ll play as a child of two worlds, born Na’vi but raised by the RDA. Fifteen years after your abduction, you are free, and must reconnect with your lost heritage. Meet new Na’vi clans, learn their ways, and join them to protect Pandora from the RDA.
While the original film focused on a fish out of water story with Jake Sully, it looks like the developers found a way to make an origin that’s pretty much the same, but instead of a human wanting to mingle, the main character is a Na’vi who has never connected with their roots.
It’s worth noting that the story takes place after the events of the first movie, so it’s possible we could be meeting some familiar faces from the world. I wouldn’t even mind any video recordings from Sigourney Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine.
If anything, the game looks fantastic, and should keep fans of Avatar engaged until the next movie releases.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on Dec. 7.
]]>Though the film does set up some sequels, the lack of updates have led fans to believe that we won’t be getting any future films, but Cameron himself has confirmed that he’s still planning on releasing more Alita down the line.
Talking to Forbes, Cameron confirms, “… on Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I’ll be working in Austin…”
We don’t have any details on Alita, besides that, but hopefully Cameron can get us updated sometime later in the year.
When Alita: Battle Angel came out back in 2019, the film was met with mixed reviews, particularly with the lead character who was digitally altered to give her the gigantic eyes from the anime. Though the movie was pretty campy at times, Robert Rodriguez fans know that it’s pretty much part of his brand.
Besides the look of Alita, the rest of the characters and the world still looked amazing.
Just for a refresher, he’s a trailer for Alita: Battle Angel:
Here’s also an official description for the film:
From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY), comes ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.
It’s unclear how many more Battle Angel movies we could be seeing down the line, but I’m hoping that lead Rosa Salazar comes back, and we get to pull on that thread with Edward Norton that was teased.
No official announcement has been made for an Alita: Battle Angel sequel.
]]>Just in, we have a new trailer for the game showcasing the story, and we also have a gameplay overview giving us a great idea of the world and what to expect from the game. First off, the trailer:
The official description reads:
Set in the never-before-seen Western Frontier of Pandora, you play as a child of two worlds, born Na’vi but raised by the RDA. Fifteen years later, you are free, but find yourself a stranger in your birthplace. Reconnect with your lost heritage, discover what it truly means to be Na’vi, and join other clans to protect Pandora from the RDA.
The story is said to take place after the events of the first Avatar, so it’s very possible we could run into some familiar characters like Jake Sully who would have completely let go of his human identity to live among the Pandoran natives.
The story of this game’s lead is kind of the same, but instead of being a human in a different Na’vi body, we have a native Na’vi character who was raised by the humans and is now reconnecting with their roots.
Here’s a gameplay overview:
A lot of people online like to bash Avatar for being a ‘forgettable’ movie, but with the game releasing and several other movies planned, we could be looking at Avatar transforming into one mega box office franchise that could rival The Avengers.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to release for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 on Dec. 7.
]]>According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Friedman, who wrote Avatar: The Way of Water, has been hired to rewrite a script that comes from Ian Springer and Jeff Kaplan. We don’t know exactly why Friedman was brought on, but THR speculates that it could have something to do with the change in tone of the film.
Some think that with Friedman onboard, we could be getting a blockbuster which has very tight themes about family—just like Avatar 2. Other films that Friedman has worked on include Syeven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds as well as the series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Cameron also had him attached to Terminator: Dark Fate, but there’s probably other reasons that movie bombed besides the writing.
Admittedly Phase 5 is off to a weak start with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so fans are hoping that Marvel Studios gets its groove back soon. After Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Adam, and Quantumania failing to deliver critically at the box office, there is definitely pressure for Marvel to try and shake things up with their tried-and-true formula.
Fantastic Four is set to release on Feb. 14, 2025, but things could change based on how development is going for the film.
]]>As per Empire (via @westerosies), Chaplin has been cast in James Cameron’s Avatar 3. Chaplin is said to be playing the leader of the ‘Ash People’ a race of Na’vi that has been described to be aggressive, and they reside in the volcanoes of Pandora.
With The Way of Water introducing us to an aquatic race of Na’vi that are also in tuned with nature, Cameron has teased that the Ash People are not as peaceful as the other natives that populate the island. Cameron had also teased that maybe this time, we’ll actually see the darker side of the Pandora locals.
With the Ash People said to be attuned to the fire, I have a feeling that they could be willing to side with the humans, what with their access to all kinds of technology. In fantasy, fiery races—usually dwarves—are known to use their fire source to craft tools and advance their instruments better than the people who don’t like to bother the nature (i.e., elves). Maybe in Avatar 3, we’ll finally see a race of Na’vi that are willing to give up the nature of the planet in order to harness more power for themselves—just like the humans.
Who knows, maybe the sequel will also give us some more humans who would actually be on the side of nature. We know that a lot of the scientist characters have a respect for the things they’re studying; maybe we could see the optimistic side of some humans as well.
Avatar 3 is set to release in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024.
]]>As per CNBC, Avatar: The Way of Water has officially grossed $598 million domestically and $1.426 billion in foreign markets—putting the movie over the $2 billion mark. Admittedly, Cameron had already said that the movie was profitable near the start of January, but passing $2 billion marks the number he had stated a month before the theatrical release.
With the movie allegedly costing more than $200 million to make, The Way of Water was said to have been one of the most expensive movies to have ever been made; so you can bet that the studio would want to make its money back. With the last film coming out in 2009, it was unclear that the movie would be able to generate Avengers-level enthusiasm from the audience; but I guess they can all breathe with a sigh of relief now.
We can’t exactly sum up why The Way of Water was such a success in theaters, but I guess that you can thank Cameron for his way of handling spectacle on the big screen. Avatar 2 was an absolutely beautiful film, and with the simple story about saving the environment, I guess it didn’t really step on anybody’s toes on a political level.
Here’s the synopsis:
Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.

Cameron says, “It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this, I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” writes The Hollywood Reporter, “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is we’re going to be okay.”
We don’t know exactly what Cameron is building up to in the franchise, but it looks like we’re going to be exploring the whole of Pandora, with the next movie said to be introducing us to the ‘Fire Na’vi’ who are called the ‘Ash People’.
Since the entire franchise relies heavily on CG locations, Cameron confirms that production has already wrapped for the third film, and progress is steadily underway for the next Avatar movies. He confirms:
“I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”
For now, you can catch Avatar: The Way of Water now screening in theaters.
]]>In a recent interview with 20 minutes (via The Direct), director James Cameron confirms that the third Avatar movie will introduce us to the ‘Ash People.’ He says, “Different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the “Ash People”.”
Though the Na’vi tribes that we’ve met are pretty attune to their surroundings like the ocean and the forest, the Ash People are said to have a more opposite stance to the series protagonists. Cameron continues:
“I want to show the Na’vi in a different light because, so far, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite.”
We don’t know exactly how the Ash People will be different, but I have a feeling they will be more open to utilizing human technology. When it comes to fantasy, races that usually live around fire or volcanoes are written to be craftsmen, who use the fire to build all kinds of things (like dwarves in Lord of the Rings). Maybe these Ash People will be considered ‘evil’ because they are more prone to destroying the nature.
Then again, that’s just my guess. I would definitely love to see where Cameron wants to take this whole thing, seeing that he has so much faith in it.
For now, catch Avatar: The Way of Water now screening in theaters.
]]>Talking to the SmartLess podcast (via IGN), Cameron shares:
“The movie could have survived having Linda [Hamilton] in it… I think it could have survived having Arnold [Scwarzenegger] in it, but when you put Linda and Arnold in it and then, you know, she’s 60-something, he’s 70-something, all of a sudden it wasn’t your Terminator movie, it wasn’t even your dad’s Terminator movie, it was your granddad’s Terminator movie.”
Personally, I think there are several other reasons why the film failed, but I do agree with Cameron that bringing back Sarah Connor and another T-800 may have muddled the reception. Not to mention, they kind of ruined the entire ending of Terminator 2 by having John Connor die by the hand of a terminator anyway.
Though the film wasn’t perfect, I did think there were a lot of interesting elements in it, including a terminator that could split in two. Too bad a lot of audiences didn’t agree.
We don’t know what the future holds for the Terminator franchise, but Cameron did say that he is currently in ‘discussion’ about what to do with it. Though a lot of fans think Cameron should just helm it himself, I do think it’s a franchise that’s behind him—especially after Avatar: The Way of Water which seems to have a message close to Cameron’s heart.
]]>Check this out:
Besides the returning cast members, we’re also getting the new characters in the form of Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis who play the leaders of the Metkayina clan who are adept with the world of water. We also have a look at the actors playing the Sully kids like Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, and Trinity Jo-Li Bliss.
With the first movie being a visual spectacle, the same could very well be said about The Way of Water. Pandora is all about the wonderful nature, and it looks like Cameron and his team are still able to capture that beauty and put it to screen.
I don’t expect the movie to make Endgame money, but it’s definitely worth a watch in the cinema.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters.
]]>On Twitter, Lang shared a poster featuring what could be Quaritch’s avatar body. Check this out:
Why so blue? Find out December 16 #Avatar #TheWayOfWater #Quaritch pic.twitter.com/MdwHbpKK7I
— Stephen Lang (@IAmStephenLang) November 22, 2022
Some speculate that this could be a completely new character, but it would be interesting if they found a way to bring Quaritch back—and this time actually have him in Jake’s shoes navigating his own alien body.
Based on the first film, we know that there are methods where humans can permanently transfer their consciousness into their avatars. Though the process didn’t work for Sigourney Weaver, it did work for protagonist Jake Sully, and he was even able to have children with Neytiri.
We don’t know what kind of arc Quaritch is supposed to have with an avatar body, but maybe we could see a dark mirror of what Jake’s character could have been should he have just stuck to the mission and not have understood the ways of the Na’Vi.
A lot of fans may be trashing on Avatar for being a ‘forgettable’ movie after so long, but based on the new trailers, I think James Cameron has upped the ante when it comes to the visuals of the sequel. Everything looks stunning, and I can’t wait to jump back into the world.
Avatar: The Way of Water comes to theaters on Dec. 16.
]]>Talking to GQ, Cameron says The Way of Water seeks to be a different kind of blockbuster by putting the focus on family. He explains:
“I was consciously thinking to myself, Okay, all these superheroes, they never have kids. They never really have to deal with the real things that hold you down and give you feet of clay in the real world.”
Of course, fans were quick to point out online that characters like Ant-Man and Iron Man had kids in the films, but it looks like Cameron is really putting the children in a central part of the story—not just mcguffins for the protagonist to objectify. Cameron continues:
“What do two characters who are warriors, who take chances and have no fear, do when they have children and they still have the epic struggle?… Their instinct is to be fearless and do crazy things. Jump off cliffs, dive-bomb into the middle of an enemy armada, but you’ve got kids. What does that look like in a family setting?”
I guess it’s a take, but we’ll just have to wait and see how The Way of Water plays out. I’ll admit, I was skeptical about a sequel to a movie from 2009, but the trailers look fantastic. If the story isn’t solid, at least we know we’ll be in for a show.
Catch Avatar: The Way of Water when it swims into theaters Dec. 16.
]]>Just in, we have a new trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water, and it gives us a great look at all the spectacular beasts and seascapes that the underwater side of Pandora has to offer. Watch this:
While the first movie had shown us a story with Jake being the ‘fish out of water’ with the Na’Vi, it seems that his kids will have to go through the same kind of transition when they are forced into living with the water tribes of Pandora.
Though we thought that the humans had been banished by the end of the first movie, it looks like they’re back with a vengeance, and I’m not entirely sure, but I have a feeling that Stephen Lang’s Colonel Quaritch is coming back with an avatar body of his own.
I’ll admit, the movie looks absolutely amazing, and even if they didn’t come up with a great story, I’m sure audiences will just come to the theater for the spectacle.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
Avatar: The Way of Water lands in theaters on Dec. 16.
]]>Just in, 20th Century Studios has drooped a new trailer for the film, and we get to see Pandora brought to life with modern visual effects. Watch this:
Cameron has always been kind of known for his obsession with the ocean, and it was said that his hobby eventually led to the making of Titanic. If anything, you get to see more of the beautiful ocean life here in the trailer, and there’s also a sequence where we see some Na’Vi trapped inside a sinking vessel. What did I say? It’s totally Avatar-meets-Titanic the movie.
I also can’t help shake the feeling that Zoe Saldana’s Ney’tiri could die in the film. The way that Jake and his daughter talk is framed to make it seem like she’s talking about Eywa or the spirit of Pandora, but for it to have some real meaning, I think we will have to lose an important character—and that would be Ney’tiri, the reason Jake embraced the Na’Vi culture in the first place.
Then again, I am just guessing. With the first movie having been criticized for having a plain narrative over the years, you would think Cameron would want to tell a story that has a lot more emotional kick to it.
Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.
Avatar: The Way of Water premieres in cinemas on Dec. 16.
]]>To gear up for the release of Avatar: The Way of Water this December, the original Avatar will be coming back to theaters, and the film has been remastered for IMAX 3D. Just in, Cameron himself has announced the release with a new poster.
Check it out:
We remastered the movie and decided it deserved a new poster…. pic.twitter.com/T2bXc2EiGa
— James Cameron (@JimCameron) August 23, 2022
We don’t know the specifics of how the movie is changed, but it does say that the newest edition includes 4K high dynamic range. I guess the detailed image of Neytiri is a testament to how sharp the images will look as compared to the 2009 version.
Though Avatar did make a splash in the box office, the film has been recently panned for its pretty underwhelming story and ‘white savior’ narrative. Who knows, maybe that’s just the decades of no sequel talking, but maybe this theatrical re-release could bring back that feeling of hype that the movie brought to the box office way back in 2009.
On the lush alien world of Pandora live the Na’vi, beings who appear primitive but are highly evolved. Because the planet’s environment is poisonous, human/Na’vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and falls in love with a Na’vi woman (Zoe Saldana). As a bond with her grows, he is drawn into a battle for the survival of her world.
The remastered Avatar comes to theaters for a limited two weeks starting on Sept. 23.
]]>Watch the trailer for Light & Magic down here:
Showcasing the people of Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects division of Lucasfilm, this series takes us back in time as they create the effects for some of the biggest and most successful films of the last 45 years.
As you can see, ILM has a pretty solid filmography under their belt, not just with classic movies like E.T. and Indiana Jones, but with more modern titles like the Avengers movies as well as the new Star Wars series. It’s also no mystery that the docu would be able to land a lot of huge directors to tell their story, what with George Lucas, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, and James Cameron having interviews as well.
Let’s also not forget Lucasfilm president and rockstar producer Kathleen Kennedy who has had a storied career of producing the most iconic films.
Though there has been a lot of criticism with overreliance on CG today, ILM has always been lauded for being pioneers in the medium, and continuing to push the technology to its limits, be it the iconic Death Star trench run from Star Wars or the completely photo-real character of Davy Jones from the Pirates films.
Light & Magic starts streaming on Disney+ on July 27.
]]>Cameron tells /Film:
“The trolls will have it that nobody gives a s*** and they can’t remember the characters’ names or one damn thing that happened in the movie … Then they see the movie again and go, ‘Oh okay, excuse me, let me just shut the f*** up right now.’ So I’m not worried about that.”
If anything, 20th Century Studios is setting up a re-release this coming September to remind fans of the entire lore surrounding Avatar. While some fans may think that the sequel may be too late, I think the world is plenty colourful that it makes sense that Cameron and Disney would want to continue building a franchise around it.
Admittedly, the original Avatar does have some story elements that won’t work today— what with Jake Sully being the ‘white savior’ character —but I think the film has a lot of places to go, especially now that they’ve moved past the Pocahontas narrative of the first film.
I honestly don’t know how Avatar is going to hold up in theaters, but I think if they create a story with mass appeal for adults and kids, then Cameron could be looking at another mega-hit.
Catch Avatar: The Way of Water when it hits cinemas on Dec. 16.
