According to Variety, Chloe Bennet, who had been cast as Blossom in the series, has stepped down from Powerpuff. No official statement has been made on Bennet’s part, but a source has claimed that she was forced to leave the show because of scheduling conflicts. Now the network is busy looking for someone else to take on the role.

Admittedly, Bennet was the most famous actress in the trio of main stars, having had a run on Agents of SHIELD. We don’t know who could replace her in the show, but hopefully The CW manages to land someone who may have the same status as Bennet when it comes to stardom.

Besides Bennet, the show also includes Dove Cameron (Bubbles), Yana Parrault (Buttercup), and Donald Faison (Professor Utonium). The show was also cast Nicholas Podany to play a version of Mojo Jojo which has been renamed Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr. The part of the mayor’s assistant Sara Bellum has also been given to Robyn Lively.

We don’t know exactly what elements they want to rework with the pilot, but a lot of people thought that the leaked script was too sexed up for a kid-friendly property like The Powerpuff Girls. Since this show is meant for the Millenials who grew up watching the cartoon, maybe it would help if the writers try to ease fans in on the idea that the PPGs are all-grown up slowly—not with an opening scene of Buttercup getting out of a sex marathon.

No release date has been set for The CW’s Powerpuff.

New Musical Series Schmigadoon! Gets First Look https://www.geekfeed.com/new-musical-series-schmigadoon-gets-first-look/ Wed, 14 Jul 2021 11:40:19 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=60506 Lorne Michaels has always been delivering some Broadway-inspired material from 30 Rock to The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and now he’s teamed up with Apple TV for a show called Schmigadoon!.

Here’s the first look for Schmigadoon!. Check out the trailer down here:

The story follows a troubled couple played by Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key who go on a backpacking trip, only to find themselves stuck in a magical town straight out of a 1940’s musical. They both discover that they can’t leave the town, and the only way out is to find ‘true love.’

The show has a star-studded cast from Alan Cumming to Kristin Chenowith. Other cast members include Dove Cameron, Fred Armisen, Ariana DeBose, and Jane Krakowski. The series is also directed and executive produced by Barry Sonnenfeld, who is the same man behind the helm of the Series of Unfortunate Events adaptation on Netflix as well as the Men in Black films.

Schmigadoon!  is considered to be some kind of love letter to Broadway, and parodies several musicals from The Music Man to Oklahoma!. Despite being an ode to the more a more optimistic and cartoon-y era of entertainment, the show also seeks to delve into the darker sides of the genre. Creator Cinco Paul describes the show:

“We’re celebrating the musicals, but we’re using this as an opportunity to deconstruct them and sort of comment on things that are were maybe problematic, and make them better.”

Schmigadoon! Is a limited series and will run for only six episodes. The show premieres on Apple TV this July 16.

The CW’s Powerpuff Girls Reboot Getting Reworked https://www.geekfeed.com/the-cws-powerpuff-girls-reboot-getting-reworked/ Thu, 27 May 2021 03:52:35 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=59680 Though we did get a look at The CW’s Powerpuff Girls reboot back in April, it looks like the network will be going back to the drawing board after a failed pilot.

As per Vanity Fair, the show is reportedly going to get reworked a day after the pilot’s script had leaked online. While there have apparently been copyright takedowns of the leaked script, you can read some of it here (and it’s… a lot):

Reactions have been very negative from fans online, but the studio believes that there’s a lot to salvage from Powerpuff to make a pilot that actually works. CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz explained:

“We believe in the cast and in [writers Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier] and [executive producer Greg Berlanti] and studio Warner Bros. In this case, the pilot didn’t work… Because we see enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot.”

Admittedly, Bubbles wanting to be a ‘fancy slut’ and Blossom interrupting Buttercup’s sex marathon can be a little too much for a live-action reboot of a kids’ cartoon. If anything, a Powerpuff rework still feels possible, but the showrunners will have to find a way to ease the audience in with how much these characters have grown.

Despite the rework, main stars Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault are still attached to the Powerpuff Girls project. The original writers are also staying onboard for the rework.

No release date has been set for Powerpuff, but the show is set to come out sometime later this year or early 2022.
