According to Deadline, Mindhunter and Gone Girl director David Fincher has been tasked by Netflix to develop an English-language adaptation of Squid Game. We don’t have much details about the series yet, but it’s rumoured that the English Squid Game could be Fincher’s major focus for the next year.

So far, it isn’t clear if Fincher’s series is going to be an extension of the canon or a straight-up remake, but fans are admittedly not happy that Fincher would be working on this—especially when everyone had been asking for him to get back on a third season of Mindhunter.

Admittedly, Fincher has been in kind of a slump recently, and Mindhunter seems to be his last major success. Mank didn’t exactly make waves when it released, and last year’s The Killer was also considered pretty plain next to other films in Fincher’s filmography.

Though directing hasn’t been so forgiving for Fincher recently, he has managed to produce some great shows like Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots—he even directed one episode in the latest season (the one with the giant evil crab).

Who knows, maybe Fincher will have a unique take on Squid Game, but for now, fans are going to be sceptical about the decision until they get a first look.

The second season of Squid Game is expected to hit Netflix on Dec. 26.

Mindhunter’s David Fincher Developing English Adaptation of Netflix’s Hit Series Squid Game https://www.geekfeed.com/fincher-developing-adaptation-of-squid-game/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 13:57:24 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=83056 Very few Netflix series manage to become cultural landmarks, and 2021’s Squid Game basically took over all of pop-culture for a while. We don’t have any updates on the second season yet, but apparently an English adaptation is in the works, and one auteur director is at the very helm.

According to The Playlist, David Fincher (Mindhunter, Se7en, Fight Club) has been hard at work developing a Squid Game adaptation for the past two years. Along for the ride is writer Dennis Kelly, who had worked with Fincher on Utopia before he ultimately left the project.

The English version of Squid Game could apparently be Fincher’s next directing gig, but it’s possible that it couldn’t push forward right now as the original series is still ongoing. Netflix head Ted Sarandos had said, “Since the main series is still ongoing, there’s no justified reason for Netflix to do a remake.”

Admittedly, I’m surprised that Fincher would take on a project like Squid Game, seeing that a lot of his more recent projects have been very dark and serious like Mindhunter and The Killer. Not that Squid Game doesn’t get dark; but the show does have a tendency to be more colorful, and the violence can sometimes get a bit too outlandish for a Fincher project.

Then again, if Fincher is able to give his own unique twist to the premise, I’d be open to see what he would come up with. Until it gets a greenlight, all we can really do is speculate.

The English adaptation of Squid Game has not been officially announced, and there’s no release date for the second season of the original show.

Holy McCallany Gives Hope on 3rd Season of David Fincher’s Mindhunter https://www.geekfeed.com/hope-on-3rd-season-of-david-finchers-mindhunter/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 12:05:17 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=80441 Director David Fincher had tackled serial killers with Zodiac, and it looks like he delved more into the topic with Netflix’s Mindhunter. The series didn’t end up completing the story it set out to tell, but star Holt McCallany (Bill Tench) did offer some hope for eager fans.

Talking to Awards Daily to promote The Iron Claw, McCallany explains that Fincher himself is still mulling over a third season of the series. He says, “I’ve heard that David’s thought about it. I’m not saying it’s going to come back. But what I am saying is that if it comes back, I’m coming back with it. You can take that to the bank, but it’ll depend on what David wants to do. It’s been a few years now, so it’s probably unlikely, but just even that he would think about it is a hopeful sign.”

As of now, Mindhunter was able to run for two seasons with the first one coming out in 2017, and the second one in 2019. The entire premise of the show followed two FBI agents (Jonathan Groff and McCallany) as they attempt to start a new branch of criminal science that sought to understand a pattern with serial killers and be able to accurately make psychological profiles on them.

Not only did the show tackle real-life murderers who were already imprisoned, but they also had agents Ford and Tench deal with serial killers who were on the loose at the time.

While the entire series was set in the 70s, the show did tease the BTK killer, who was active around the time, but was only captured in 2005. Since the show hasn’t ended that arc yet, fans are hopeful that the third season could close the book on everything Mindhunter had set up.

A third season of Mindhunter on Netflix hasn’t been announced, but fans are still hopeful Fincher can make it happen.

‘It’s Quality Over Quantity’: Netflix to Produce Less Films Moving Forward https://www.geekfeed.com/its-quality-over-quantity-for-netflix/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 18:22:14 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=79542 Back when Netflix was just starting out, it seemed like the streaming giant was just saying yes to every kind of project. Though it has resulted in some great, experimental shows like BoJack Horseman, Stranger Things, and GLOW, there have certainly been some misses as well (like the live-action Cowboy Bebop).

With more streaming services to compete with, Netflix is now said to be changing their strategy when it comes to producing films. According to Variety, Netflix is now pushing back from producing roughly 50 films a year to only 25-30. Netflix’s head of their film division, Scott Stuber says:

“Right now, we’re not trying to hit a set number of film releases. It’s about ‘Let’s make what we believe in,’… And let’s actually put forth a slate that we can stand behind and say, ‘This is the best version of a romantic comedy. This is the best version of a thriller. This is the best version of a drama.’”

For now, it looks like Netflix is going to be more scrutinizing when it comes to their projects before giving them the greenlight. If anything, the strategy seems to be working. There is a lot of buzz going around for Bradley Cooper’s upcoming biopic Maestro, and their recently released film Fair Play starring Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor has also been getting a lot of critical buzz.

We also may not be getting a new season of Mindhunter, but cinephiles are all in for a David Fincher movie starring Michael Fassbender with The Killer.

Though we may not have that same gung-ho Netflix that just seemed to be greenlighting any project, I think it would also be great to have more quality projects released and spaced over time. Just look at the pickle Disney+ is in with their Marvel properties.

Fassbender is Back in Latest Trailer for The Killer https://www.geekfeed.com/fassbender-is-back-in-trailer-for-the-killer/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 10:11:54 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=79395 Michael Fassbender may have taken a break from the big screen since X-Men: Dark Phoenix  released back in 2019, but it looks like he’s coming back, and he has an upcoming movie with David Fincher called The Killer.

The movie is set to release on Netflix in early November, and we have a new trailer highlighting Fassbender’s meticulous mercenary. Watch this:

After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.

The premise does sound a lot like what happened with the John Wick films, but since we know that director David Fincher is at the helm, we should expect something more methodical and dramatic, and not so much action-oriented.

Not to mention, it’s also great that Fassbender is back at the top of his game, acting with an auteur director. With his last films being part of the dying X-franchise as well as the latter Alien films, it’s going to be interesting to see him going back into character dramas. Too bad his film with Taika Waititi, Next Goal Wins, didn’t really get all the buzz it was expected to receive.

We may not be getting a new season of Mindhunter anytime soon, but Fincher definitely isn’t done telling stories of meticulous killers. Hopefully Fassbender manages to deliver, because The Killer is looking stellar so far.

The Killer comes out of the cage on Nov. 10, only on Netflix.

Watch Final Trailer for Love, Death & Robots Vol. 3 https://www.geekfeed.com/watch-final-trailer-for-love-death-robots-vol-3/ Sun, 22 May 2022 14:48:28 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=65308 Netflix has a lot of critically-acclaimed IPs from Klaus to BoJack Horseman, but a lot of fans have loved the anthology series that is Love, Death & Robots. Volume 3 of the show is set to premiere tomorrow, and we have a new trailer to get fans hyped for the launch.

Check the new trailer out for Love, Death + Robots season 3:

We don’t have an official story breakdown for every entry, but that’s part of the fun when it comes to a show like Love, Death & Robots. Though anthology shows like Black Mirror have to be brought together with a central theme, this series manages to captivate audiences with three simple things—and sometimes they only need one element in every episode. There’s something for everyone.

With Netflix allegedly closing down their animated division, some are suspecting that Volume 3 could be it for Love, Death & Robots. With the streaming service currently scrambling to find out a way to up subscriber numbers though, maybe there’s some hope for them to save their animated shows, seeing that a lot of them have critical acclaim.

Emmy-winning animated anthology Love, Death + Robots returns with a third volume executive produced by Tim Miller (Deadpool, Terminator: Dark Fate) and David Fincher (MINDHUNTER, Mank). Terror, imagination and beauty combine in nine new episodes which stretch from uncovering an ancient evil to a comedic apocalypse, telling startling short stories of fantasy, horror and science-fiction with trademark wit and visual invention.

Love, Death & Robots hits Netflix on May 20.

Netflix Drops New Trailer for Love, Death & Robots Vol. 3 https://www.geekfeed.com/netflix-drops-new-trailer-for-love-death-robots-vol-3/ Thu, 12 May 2022 15:45:10 +0000 https://www.geekfeed.com/?p=65207 Netflix may have been said to be shutting down their animated division, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see any more animated material on the platform. Love, Death & Robots is set to come back later this month, and we have a new trailer that gives us a look at the incoming shorts for Vol. 3.

Watch the new Love, Death & Robots trailer down here:

The official description reads:

Emmy-winning animated anthology Love, Death + Robots returns with a third volume executive produced by Tim Miller (Deadpool, Terminator: Dark Fate) and David Fincher (MINDHUNTER, Mank). Terror, imagination and beauty combine in nine new episodes which stretch from uncovering an ancient evil to a comedic apocalypse, telling startling short stories of fantasy, horror and science-fiction with trademark wit and visual invention.

While the series has been an anthology for the past two seasons, it looks like we’ll be having some recurring characters with the Three Robots entry. We don’t know who else could show up in this set of shorts, but I’m sure that there were definitely some characters that stood out among others—like the lead girl from The Witness.

We don’t know how long Love, Death & Robots has on Netflix, but I think it’s probably one of the more celebrated animated properties on the platform. Who knew that everyone’s interests could get piqued with just three simple words? Fingers crossed we’ll be getting some more down the line.

Love, Death & Robots comes back to Netflix with its third volume on May 20.
