April Fools Day may be the time for fake news on the internet, but it looks like this Euphoria star could really be in talks to star in a long-awaited live-action adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam.
According to Deadline, Sydney Sweeney (Madame Web, The White Lotus) is now in final negotiations to star in the live-action Gundam movie being produced by Legendary Pictures. No details have been revealed on who Sweeney is playing or what the story could be, but we do know that Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle is going to be directing the movie, with Legendary also teaming up with Bandai Namco Filmworks to develop the film.
Mobile Suit Gundam was a franchise that started in 1979, and while giant robots fighting each other has been a thing since the 50s, Gundam has managed to stay relevant with its serious themes on war and humanity—all that brought into a world filled with giant military robots.
Though there is a ‘Universal Century’ canon that takes place in the original Gundam timeline, Gundam has also pulled a storytelling model akin to Final Fantasy where every few years a new timeline is introduced with new politics and lore, and the only constant is that there are giant robots being used to fight a very serious war between humans. The newest iteration is Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, but previous hit titles include Gundam Wing, Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans, and Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.
With this live-action movie, some think that it could be a completely new established timeline, but it can also easily tell a contained story that takes place in the OG Gundam canon since it’s a war that spans an entire solar system. Though there are new timelines established, there are still new stories being told in the UC like Netflix’s Requiem for Vengeance.
I’d honestly love to see Sweeney be a young pilot in a mobile suit. You think she’s going to be a Newtype?
No release date has been announced for the live-action Gundam movie.
