The DCU is gearing up for its first major motion picture with James Gunn’s Superman, but so much of the movie is being kept under wraps that we don’t know how this one will set up the new timeline.
Talking to The Wrap, Gunn reveals a little about the new set-up and how everything is different by the time audiences meet David Corenswet’s Clark Kent. He says, “We just start in the middle of the action. Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other.”
Though the relationship between Lois and Superman is already present in the movie, it looks like rivalry with Luthor is yet to begin. Gunn continues, “Lex hates Superman’s guts from the beginning, although they don’t know each other personally… So we start right in the middle of the action. It takes place over a short amount of time.”
Gunn can’t reveal much about the story, but it does seem that the relationship between Lois and Clark is going to be at the very heart of Superman. So many people already have an ideal dynamic for the couple, but Gunn does tease that their relationship will be different this time around. “The relationship between David and Rachel’s [characters] on screen is something I don’t think we’ve seen in… It’s a complicated relationship and we really get into it and there’s long scenes that are about their relationship and the way they relate and what it would be like for a person who’s this incredibly intelligent, strong-headed, stubborn, skeptical journalist, to have a relationship with someone who can lift a skyscraper.”
Though Superman may be the star of the show, the fact that they’ve cast Rachel Brosnahan—who is arguably more famous than Corenswet—as Lois could mean that she’s the one who’s going to be commanding a lot of the scenery whenever she’s around Clark.
Then again, this is just speculation, so until the trailer comes out this week, all we can really do is guess.
Superman is set to come out in theatres on July 11, 2025.
