Youtubers Danny and Michael Philippou—better known as RackaRacka—had wowed audiences with Talk to Me, and were ready to take on a major IP with the upcoming Street Fighter film. Bad news for their fans though, because it looks like the Philippous have exited the project.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the duo have been forced to step down partly because of scheduling conflicts. Legendary and Capcom were expecting to start production sooner, but the brothers had decided to shift focus to their upcoming A24 film Bring Her Back, which was set to start shooting later this month; the movie will star Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt.
Though RackaRacka did turn heads with a horror movie, their Youtube content has proven that they can also shoot some action sequences. Eight years ago, they even made a short sponsored by Street Fighter: Resurrection. Check this out:
We don’t know what kind of tone their Street Fighter was going to be, but based on the logo that was officially released, it did seem like the movie was going to be embracing the more cartoon-y aspects of the franchise.
For now, the search for a new director/s is on, but you have to wonder what RackaRacka had in mind for their adaptation. We know that fighting games are hard to adapt, but if Mortal Kombat can have a successful reboot, why not Street Fighter?
No release date has been set for Street Fighter, but with the film expected to start this year, I’m guessing they’re aiming for a late 2025 or early 2026 release.
