It was back in 2017 when we got Alien: Covenant, and the film was so poorly received that it effectively stopped the franchise in its tracks. Even if that is the case, 20th Century Studios is still going to give us Alien: Romulus, and we have some new plot details thanks to star Cailee Spaeny.
Talking to Variety, Spaeny revealed that the film will be taking place between the events of Alien and Aliens—the first two films in the franchise. She says, “It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie.”
Granted there is 57 years between the timeline of Alien and Aliens, so there is a lot of room for Romulus to tell its story—it can even tell a whole new trilogy should things go right.
Admittedly, Covenant did end with the tease that David (Michael Fassbender) was planning to cause some chaos with the new Xenomorphs that he’s breeded. With a whole new cast of characters being focused on for Romulus, I’m just hoping they manage to tie up any loose ends, because he’s undoubtedly one of the best characters to come out of the franchise ever since they rebooted the whole thing with Prometheus.
If anything, David has already transcended two different crews with Prometheus and Covenant, so it does kind of track that he would be facing a new cast of characters. But until it’s officially revealed, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Alien: Romulus is aiming for a release date on Aug. 16, 2024.
