Venom may have been a critical bomb for Sony, but that doesn’t mean that nobody’s excited for the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The movie has been incredibly hyped up by everyone who’s seen it, and Sony has reportedly greenlit the sequel as well as an all-woman spinoff.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron) has been tapped to direct the sequel for Into the Spider-Verse. We don’t know if the story will just focus on Miles Morales’ universe or even more reality hopping, but after the “crossover” that will be the first film, I’m interested to see how Sony will be upping the ante.
As for the all-woman team-up, Lauren Montgomery (Voltron) is said to have been tapped to helm the spinoff. The group is said to include the likes of Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, Madame Spider, and Silk. I’m just curious why Peni Parker’s name isn’t on that list, seeing that she’s already one of the Spider-people that will be introduced in the first film.
While a lot of fans are groaning at the unexpected success of Venom, everyone is genuinely looking forward to the release of Spider-Verse. Critics who have already seen the film have been claiming that it’s the best animated movie of the year, and that’s already contending with the likes of Ralph Breaks the Internet and The Incredibles II.
Catch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse when it hits theaters Dec. 14.
