While Sony has had their mishandlings of the Spider-Man franchise, they have done some great work with Into the Spider-Verse and the recent movies with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. What’s interesting is, word is going around that Sony is aiming to diversify their Spider-Verse even further.
According to That Hashtag Show, Sony is said to be splitting the franchise, with two stories being followed—one being Peter Parker’s, and the other one being Miles Morales’. This is what they wrote specifically:
We have exclusively learned that Marvel and Sony will take Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise and spinoff a separate Miles Morales Spider-Man franchise. That means splitting the franchise in two.
THS also points out that during the renegotiations with Marvel and Sony after Far from Home, it was said that Sony is looking to ‘future-proof’ the franchise; this then is allegedly what lead to the multi-verse situation that we’re expecting to get with Spider-Man: No Way Home.
What we’re expecting with the ‘Spider-Verse’ is that old iterations of the characters remain canon (like Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield), while at the same time Sony can introduce other versions of Spider-Man that don’t have to mess with established stories of others.
Of course, these are all just rumors and speculations for now. Until we get No Way Home, all we can really do is guess. Even then, it would make sense for Sony to ‘future-proof’ something like Spider-Man. Even now fans are sceptical that Marvel is only going down from here after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Catch Spider-Man: No Way Home when it hits theaters Dec. 17. The next Spider-Verse movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is set to come out on June 24.
