X-Men’s Simon Kinberg to Write New Star Wars Trilogy

Creatives have come and gone when it comes to Star Wars, and with Steven Knight recently leaving the next Rey Skywalker movie, fans are starting to think that these announcements of incoming projects are starting to become meaningless.

Interestingly enough, it looks like Lucasfilm is ready to announce the next writer onboard the franchise—and it sounds like a huge project as well. Deadline reports that Simon Kinberg, who had worked on the Fox X-Men films since The Last Stand, has closed a deal with Lucasfilm to write a whole trilogy of Star Wars films.

It’s unclear if this is going to be the mainline follow-up to the Skywalker saga, but it does seem like Lucasfilm is trying to remedy what happened with the Sequel Trilogy in that a different writer was responsible for each entry (at least, when it started). With Kinberg onboard for three movies out the gate, we should expect some kind of consistency to the value of the three films.

Though Kinberg is best known for his work on X-Men, he also has the status of co-creating the animated Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni; he was also a consultant on The Force Awakens back in 2015.

I’ll admit, neither of those SW properties is my favourite, but they are for a lot of fans, and maybe Kinberg has the right idea for where to take this trilogy. Let’s just hope that Lucasfilm doesn’t secretly sideline him down the line like what happened with creatives like Patty Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Damon Lindelof, David Benioff, Dan Weiss, and probably many more.

We don’t know when Kinberg’s Star Wars is set to move forward, but hopefully we get more details soon.
