Shrek 5 Release Date Officially Announced

Shrek 5 Release Date Officially Announced

The ending of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish had teased a return of Shrek and the Kingdom of Far Far Away, and now DreamWorks has officially announced when the movie is going to be releasing.

As per the reveal Shrek 5 is officially coming out on July 01, 2026:

The post also confirms the return of original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz. No confirmation yet on whether Antonio Banderas will be reprising his role of Puss.

So far, no details have been released about the story, and all the fans can do so far is speculate. The last film Shrek Forever After, had Shrek dealing with being a parent, and having his life taken away from him. By the end of the film though, he gets his life back and has a new appreciation for his family with Fiona.

With each Shrek entry progressing Shrek and Fiona’s milestones in life, some speculate that the movie could deal with Shrek’s own kids growing up and having kids of their own, making Shrek and Fiona grandparents.

The usual reboot/sequel route may tackle an origin story for the principal three characters, but maybe there could be a new lead that will have the original characters as their mentors. Then again, this is animation, so it’s possible that the film can just pick up where it left off and forget that it’s been 15 years since the release of the last film.

I’m just hoping that the film manages to capture all the same kind of modern humor that made the original fun while being a parody of every Disney fairytale that came before it. You think there are some jabs they can make at Disney now? How about pitting Shrek against an Elsa type?

Shrek 5 comes to theatres on July 1, 2026.
