Sebastian Stan’s Face-Altering Surgery is Not Turning Out as Planned in Trailer for A24’s A Different Man

Sebastian Stan may be best known for playing Bucky/The Winter Soldier for Marvel, but he’s managed to find himself attached to a lot of artsy projects outside of the big franchise films. Just in, we have a new trailer for A Different Man which has Sebastian playing a deformed man who gets a facelift only to realize something was still bothering him.

Check the trailer for A Different Man down here:

Aspiring actor Edward (Stan) undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he loses out on the role he was born to play and becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.

It’s interesting to note that Adam Pearson, who plays the actor who Edward gets irked at, actually does look like that. He was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis which leaves his skin covered in thick tumors.

Pearson has been an advocate of fighting against stereotypical roles for people with disabilities onscreen. He says, “Why are non-disabled people writing about disability without consultation? Because when that happens, the end result you might get it right once but nine times out of 10 it’s going to be really inauthentic and inaccurate and serve not only the disabled community accordingly but disabled cinema lovers accordingly.”

Though Pearson’s condition does serve as a relevant plot point to the story, it’s ultimately Edward’s journey to go on. Based on the preview, the A24 film looks like a wild introspective, and I’m really eager to see what kind of performance Stan is going to deliver.

A Different Man releases in theaters on Oct. 3.
