Probably one of the most prevalent criticisms of the upcoming Little Mermaid movie is the realistic depiction of all the animals, and a lot of fans think that characters like Flounder and Sebastian had lost their animated charm.
A new clip from the film, though, gives us a good look at an animated Sebastian (Daveed Diggs) talking to Scuttle (Awkwafina). Check this out:
The clip basically comes from the scene where Ariel saves Prince Eric, and we have a little fun with Scuttle and Sebastian figuring out what to do about Ariel.
While the stills of Sebastian have looked pretty weird, watching him move, blink, and talk in this clip actually makes me feel a bit warmer toward the design. They couldn’t really just animate the same kind of look from the original movie, but I think he looks enough like a good mix between a cartoon and an actual crab here.
“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
Watch out for The Little Mermaid when it comes to cinemas on May 26.
