While Scott Pilgrim vs. The World may have underperformed during its box office run, the film has since become a cult favorite and fans are celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. What’s interesting is, we could be getting a return of Scott and his kooky friends from Canada via an anime.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Edgar Wright revealed that there are currently discussions for a Scott Pilgrim anime. He says:

“There’s some plans — and there’s nothing official yet — but there are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way. We’ve been talking with Bryan and with [Scott Pilgrim EP Jared LeBoff] for a while [about]: What if we did something with the books in anime form? It’s being discussed as we speak.”

It’s ironic that an anime would come so late in the game for Scott Pilgrim since that’s usually the first level of adaptation properties get before they become movies. Lucky enough for the franchise, it got a great-looking film first.

When it comes to an anime though, there was actually a short animation from Adult Swim that came out to promote the movie. While it’s not sure yet, this could very well be the aesthetic of the series, and Bryan Lee O’Malley’s art style works very well for a cartoon:

Personally, I loved the film, but after reading the comics, I’d say that a lot of story elements were left on the cutting room floor. With an anime, I’m hoping we can get the deeper characterization of multiple characters —especially the Evil Exes— as well as a more fantastical showdown with Gideon Graves.

A Scott Pilgrim vs. The World anime is yet to be announced.
