It’s been more than a decade since Scott Pilgrim vs. The World graced screens and became a cult favorite, and now streaming giant Netflix wants to bring the quirky world of Bryan Lee O’Malley into the realm of animation.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, O’Malley, alongside BenDavid Grabinski, are set to executive produce a Scott Pilgrim anime for Netflix and UCP. The show is said to be tapping Star Wars: Visions studio Science SARU for the animation as well.
In the original Scott Pilgrim comic, we follow the story of slacker/musician Scott Pilgrim who finds himself in love with new-girl-in-town Ramona Flowers. Things take a turn for the deadly when Scott discovers that he has to literally fight off Ramona’s Seven Evil Exes—comedy and action ensue, and the comic gets a movie adaptation with Edgar Wright at the helm.
If you read the comic, you’ll know that the movie actually dropped a lot of content, from several plot points to development for several characters. We don’t know if this anime is going to be adapting Scott’s story or continuing it, but it would be great if we could get the hyper-bombastic ending that we got in the comic, which renders the movie ending lackluster if you ever had the chance to read it.
That being said, the film is still a great adaptation, and it really sets the mood for Scott’s world. Hopefully they get the original actors like Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead to reprise their roles. Fingers crossed.
No release date has been announced for Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim anime.
