Sasha Calle had joined the DC Universe at a very turbulent time, and when she was cast as Supergirl in The Flash, it was supposed to be a multi-picture deal.
Flash forward to 2024, and DC Studios is now led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and the DCEU has been dropped; all the heroes are set to be recast, and Supergirl is now going to be played by House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock. It really did feel like the rug was pulled from under Calle, but she seems to be making peace with what’s happened. She tells The Hollywood Reporter:
“I look back at [playing Supergirl] as something super beautiful. It’s been said that a queer Latina girl like me couldn’t be Supergirl. But I was, and no one can take that away from me. That is the most important thing for me; I did something that mattered. And whether you saw yourself represented in me or not, a lot of people really connected with her and loved her.”
Calle also said that she found kinship with Leslie Grace, who had shot the Batgirl movie before it was shelved for tax purposes. She also says something that could possibly be throwing shade at the current DC heads. Check this out:
“I also want to work with people who value me and respect me and are really excited to work with me. That’s what I wish for myself, and that’s what I wish for anybody in this business, but that was a rough experience. So I look forward to working with people in this industry who see my value and who are excited to work with me.”
It’s certainly a shame that Calle wasn’t able to deliver the Supergirl she wanted, but she’s just one of many other passionate artists that weren’t able to give their all when it came to the mess that was the DCEU.
We don’t know if Gunn is going to deliver his universe any better, but having been on the Marvel side of things, maybe he has an idea of how better to tackle a new universe—especially since he’s going to start from the ground up this time.
Superman is set to release in theaters July 11, 2025.
