After the Russo Brothers, Marvel Studios is now looking for new faces to try their hand at the big-budget crossover Avengers films. We already know that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton has been hired to direct The Kang Dynasty, but it seems that the MCU may have found someone to take on the highly-anticipated Secret Wars.
As per The Weekly Planet Podcast (via The Direct), Black Panther director Ryan Coogler could be in line to helm an upcoming Avengers film. Host James Clement says:
“And Ryan Coogler, here’s another scoop, Mason, is at the very least one of the directors, is currently in talks for Secret Wars. Which makes a lot of sense and yeah, the source here says, this is a reliable source, this person says ‘a fairly obvious choice.’ And it is. That makes sense.”
While having Coogler helm the project would be great, I think I’ll have to wait for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to see just how excited I’m going to be for him to direct Secret Wars. For all the praise that Black Panther gets, I honestly thought the film was pretty mid, and there was a lot of shoddy CG work toward the end. Personally, I’m even worried for Cretton taking on Kang Dynasty when his biggest film had been his last.
I guess whoever gets hired to helm, there’s going to be a lot of pressure to deliver, especially when they have to follow the success of Avengers: Endgame. I wouldn’t be shocked if Coogler backed out, especially with him focusing so much on the Black Panther franchise, even after the death of Chadwick Boseman.
For now, watch out for Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which comes to theaters on Nov. 11.
