Rumor: George R.R. Martin has Finished the GOT Books, but There’s One Snag

For years fans have been nagging on George R.R. Martin to finish The Winds of Winter, but it looks like he’s nowhere near done, and the show has already written the ending of Martin’s story for him. With a lot of disappointment following the last season though, fans are now looking back at Martin to give them a proper ending in the books. Rumor has it, that he’s actually done, but there’s just a little snag.

According to Ian McElhinney, who played Barristan  Selmy in the series, Martin has finished writing two of the final books, but he has a deal with HBO that he can’t release them until the show ends. McElhinney explains:

“What I’ve been told is … George has already written books 6 and 7 … But he struck an agreement with [the showrunners] that he would not publish the final two books until the series has completed.”

For now just take this with a grain of salt, but it would definitely make sense that HBO would want all the attention on the series first before Martin can finish his story. With all the hate following Season 8, it helps that there isn’t any source material that fans can constantly refer to.

While the show was making it out to have Cersei as the main villain, the last episode has revealed that Daenerys is the main antagonist all along. The show has built up (poorly) on Dany breaking down, and her genocide of King’s Landing is supposedly the “pay off”. I would honestly have been fine if the show made Dany the villain, but the development is so hasty and abrupt that it’s basically murdering her character arc.

Catch the final episode of Game of Thrones 8 when it comes out this Sunday on HBO.
