Trailer for Robots Feels Like a Comedic Black Mirror Episode

Black Mirror had posed the problem of humans replacing loved ones with robots, but the movie Robots runs with the concept and has seemingly made a romantic comedy out of the idea.

Check out the trailer starring Jack Whitehall (Jungle Cruise) and Shailene Woodley (Pam & Tommy):

The synopsis of the movie reads:

Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves.

The movie feels like an expansion of the Black Mirror episode Be Right Back where a woman (Hayley Atwell) decides to have a robot copy of her deceased boyfriend (Domhnall Gleeson) made with his e-mails being used as a reference for its personality. I guess Robots still has some questions to ask about AI, but rather, we have a more comedic look at how people rely on technology too much and how they use it to project a better image of themselves to others.

While a lot of people online are discussing about how AI will lead to some human social catastrophe, little romps like Robots looks like something that could add some levity to the topic. Whitehall has been a well-loved voice in comedy, and pair that with a star like Shailene Woodley, you’re sure to have a solid summer rom-com with a touch of science fiction.

Catch Robots in theaters when it comes out on May 19.
