Director Rian Johnson was hired to kickstart his own Star Wars trilogy after The Last Jedi, but with all the backlash online and retconning from The Rise of Skywalker, fans are beginning to wonder if Johnson still had a future in Star Wars. The good news is, he’s still onboard, and confirms he’s still in talks with Lucasfilm.
When asked by Variety about the status of his Star Wars project, Johnson replied, “I’m still talking to Lucasfilm but they haven’t announced anything on their slate yet.” While the next Star Wars movie is set to come out in 2022, it has been confirmed that the film is not Johnson’s, and it’s likely that we’ll have to wait a few more years before he starts working on the franchise again.
For now, Johnson is set to make a sequel to his 2019 hit Knives Out, and it will follow the story of Daniel Craig’s investigator characters Benoit Blanc. When it comes to the sequel of Knives Out, Johnson had this to say:
“I’m always kind of saying, ‘If this movie does all right, I would be thrilled to another one.’ But a lot has to happen. I have to write a script. The fun thing is thinking about it in the context of Agatha Christie and Poirot or Miss Marple. That way the sky’s the limit. It’s, ‘What is the next case?’ It’s not about building a mythology around the character.”
We have yet to get a release date for the Knives Out sequel or Johnson’s next Star Wars project, but hopefully we get an update in the latter half of 2020.
