It may be taking a while to get off the ground, but we know that Lucasfilm is planning to bring Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) back to the big screen. We don’t know exactly what she’s doing in her movie, but it looks like they have very big plans for her.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rey’s current status in the franchise as a whole is said to be integral to what Lucasfilm is currently planning. A source close to the production had said, “She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now.” It’s also been confirmed that Rey Skywalker is expected to appear in multiple movies—not just the film being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
We know that Simon Kinberg has also recently signed on with Lucasfilm to develop a new trilogy for Star Wars, but it’s unclear if his movies are going to be the continuation of the main Skywalker Saga or something else entirely. With Lucasfilm announcing the involvement of creatives then seemingly firing them—like what happened with Damon Lindelof, Stephen Knight, Taika Waititi, and Patty Jenkins—fans are undoubtedly sceptical about Kinberg and whether he would be allowed to actually finish what he started out to make.
Personally, I’m still waiting on that Rian Johnson trilogy because The Last Jedi to me was honestly the last real swing that Star Wars had in terms of story. The rest just feels like nostalgia bait, and it’s been going on for years.
For now, fans are hoping that production will finally start with the Rey Skywalker movie next year. No release date has been announced though.
