Hollywood has had a very flimsy history with video game movies in that no movie based on a game has been able to live up to the hype. Sony looks to be remedying that now by launching their own studio that will focus solely on bringing games to the big screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Playstation Productions will be focusing on bringing Playstation properties like God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, and more into movies or TV. The project has Asad Qizilbash as the lead, and he had this to say about the new studio:
“Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves… One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the PlayStation community loves.”
This is certainly an interesting idea on Sony’s part, what with actually having the films developed in-house with the people who are also responsible for the games. Of course, we have no idea if any of the films will actually turn out good yet, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction for video game movies that the fans could actually enjoy.
For now, the only Playstation movie that Sony is working on is Uncharted starring Tom Holland. We don’t know if the Playstation Production banner will be attached to the film, but it certainly would be a fitting start. Let’s just hope it manages to impress when it eventually comes out.
No release date has been set for Sony’s Uncharted movie.
