Kratos and Ellie may be one of the few more recognized PlayStation mascots these days, but there is also some love for newer heroine Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn.
There was word going around back in 2022 that Netflix was working on an adaptation of the hit Guerrilla Games franchise, but now it looks like Sony is pushing forward with a movie.
In a recent press conference during Sony’s CES 2025 (via IGN), it was officially announced that PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures would be working on an adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, coming off the heels of the hit(?) Uncharted movie. PS Productions head Asad Qizilbash said:
“Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn… Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen.”
So far, no official star or director has been announced, but seeing as how cinematic the game already is, the movie may already have half of its pre-production (even more) done for it.
For context, Horizon Zero Dawn focuses on the story of Aloy, a young woman who lives in the post-apocalyptic world where civilization is destroyed and mechanical animals roam the land. Technology from the old world is forbidden in HZD, but Aloy somehow discovers how to use it, and as the story progresses she discovers just what destroyed the old world, and how the Earth came to be the way it was.
Besides the dazzling visuals, the big hook with Horizon is the unique mecha animals that range from regular sized deer to gigantic mecha crocodiles. The world itself is also pretty interesting, presenting Aloy with different human factions that have adapted to the world; some have even gone full mediaval—except their armor looks like it was put together with old PC parts.
We don’t know much about the movie yet, but fingers are crossed it will be more like The Last of Us rather than the Uncharted film.
So far, no release date has been set for the Horizon movie.
